remember, when Gulliver traveled....

ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

I gave apples to Luce on tuesday and wednesday morning.

he has been in so much pain from gas and his poop is friggin ROCK HARD. and watching him struggle is FRIGHTENING. I feel like he's going to pop a hernia or a blood vessel.

so, no more apples.

what else can I do?

this morning I just fed him some banana (no cereal) and he'll have avocado later.

I did the thermometer trick this morning and managed to get him to poop out the hardest stuff....I finally started to see yesterday's lunch Chat Icon (sweet potato orange and opposed to Tuesday's sweet pea green) but he's still super gassy.

he was crying so much last night...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

fruit wise, what can I give him....so far he's had pears, banana and peaches which have been fine on his stomach.

can I give him plum?

anyone else's dc have this kind of apple reaction? Chat Icon

my poor baby. tia.

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

def. don't give cereal and bananas as those tend to be binding.

I would give something easy on the tummy. For DS, peas always seem to do the trick.

be careful with pears though. I actually am extremely allergic to apples & pears (although I get stomach uclers and have the reverse affects that your son is experiencing). Luckily DS doesn't have my allergy.

ditto that!

NO bananas... banana is binding, as is the cereal.

Plum is fine too.

Prunes or pears - you can get pureed prunes in the babyfood section. I do it all the time when Yael is backed up. EIther that, or some prune/pear juice.

Ditto.

Apples are binding...unless you eat them with the skin (unfortunately not good for babies!)

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

Pureed prunes always did the trick

If not, I used to go for the big guns and put some unsweetened prune juice in a sippy cup.

I also say prunes. I kept them on hand solely for that purpose... they took about 12 hours to work but they certainly did the trick!

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

We still sometimes need prunes on a daily basis!

You can puree them - I usually just buzz them with the hand mixer, but you do get little bits of skin in them, so I pass them through a strainer too. It's a total PITA! If I could get prepared prune puree here, I would totally do it (we had the Gerber ones when we were in the States, they do an organic one).

Pears like others said. T loved mango also - don't even need to cook, just cut up and puree.

a little bit of diluted juice is okay to give to help ease constipation - try prune, pear, orange, or strangely apply (according to Wholesomebabyfood.com, it's the pectin in the apple that's binding and it's not an issue in juice).

PRUNES & PEARS!!

I think you are making your own food (so are we). You can buy dried prunes (I buy the ones that are non-sorbate- just dried prunes, that's it) - steam them & then puree. They come out a little thick so I usually add formula before serving. Pears I just steam & puree as normal.

DD also has a bit of a problem with apples and bananas make her bleed Chat Icon

Good Luck!!!

I totally did this too.

We could NEVER give ds Rice cereal after trying it for the first week. He was so backed up, the poor kid. Once he tried them all....we stuck to oatmeal. You could even mix in the baby food prunes with the oatmeal

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

Ok, I'm divulging an old family secret. This works every. single. time.

Do you have any fennel seed in the house? If you do, boil some water (about 2 cups) and add 8-10 fennel seeds to the water. Steep the seeds in the water for about 1/2 hour. The water will turn a yellowish color.

Let it cool (you can add a tiny bit of sugar or Splenda like I do) and put it in his bottle.

I typically try to do 2 bottles during the day.

I can't explain why, but my grandmother's mother SWORE by this and it's been used in my family ever since. My sister told me to do this and I thought she was crazy, but it worked!!!

Fennel tea does the trick as well! I used to drink fennel tea when I BF...just to make sure that he pooped well!

Prunes and pears are great poop promoters--as others have said, skip the bananas, apples, and cereal for a few days. Definitely the rice cereal, oat shouldn't be as bad.

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

agreed with the pears/prunes, works for us every time ...

Also, very TMI, but Chloe gets constipated, and My SIL is an expert, her child had an issue down there and knows all about poop. If you see he is having trouble getting it out, push with your thumb right to the left ( your left) of the opening, you will on a baby literally feel the hard ball of the poop and you can massage it out ( the things we do for love Chat Icon )...

She showed me how when Chloe was backed up, worked like a charm. FM me if you ened detailed instructions Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

BEWARE of prunes though..DD had a similar situation when she was Luce's age, well I gave her half a jar of prunes, and if I tell you I've never seen a poop blow out of this proportion I'd be lying...it was insane..and we were out to lunch at a restaurant with no changing table...fun times!!!

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

i would do prunes. i pureed all my food but every so often i would buy a container or two of gerber prunes for the reason you mentioned! i noticed that i was getting into the habit of giving dd apples or bananas pretty much everyday ( always have them on hand) and her poops were like marbles.

apples and bananas are binding so i would swap it out for other fruits like blueberries, papaya ,peach, pear, cantalope,pinapple..

maybe do the apple no more than 1 time a week.

Re: ugh...apples. what a disaster. lots of poop talk.

AJ loves apples but her body doesnt.

I ended up mixing pears and apples. It wasnt until she was over a year old that she was allowed just apples or applesauce. We also kept prune juice handy.

She popped so badly she DID bleed. We'd have to told her ankles and help her push it out. You'd still it almost as if her insides were coming outside Chat Icon then a bit of blood then small poops. Poor baby. I hated it, she cried so hard.

Stayed away from the BART after that. Bananas, Apples, Rice, Toast. Even now she's not allowed more than one of those things in a day.
