Packing for Cruise

Does anyone have any tips for packing for an 8 day cruise? I am leaving from NY and heading south! It is my first cruise and I am not sure what to bring!

I tend to over pack no matter how long the trip is.
From what i've heard, you'll need day attire (bathing suits, cover ups, capris, etc), nice outfits for dinner, some cruises have formal nights also.

Re: Packing for Cruise

What cruise line? Some seem to be fancier than others.

I've usually gone on Royal Caribbean and I usually bring a nice cocktail dress for formal nights because that seems to be the norm for them. That night they'll take your picture in front of the fake backgrounds like prom night, so I'd bring something like a cocktail dress (if you are going on RC, they'll give you the rules about what can be worn in the dining room, basically no jeans, bathing suit etc).

Other than a cocktail dress, I'd say sundressess or casual wear to wear around the boat.

Re: Packing for Cruise

It depends upon the cruise line. NCL and Carnival are less formal. Celebrity, HAL, RC and Princess are more formal.

An 8 night cruise will likely have 2 formal nights. Celebrity asks for smart casual in the evenings which means no shorts, jeans or t-shirts.

We are going on a 7 night Celebrity cruise soon and for myself I am bringing:

2 bathing suits
1 cover up
pjs
2 shorts
3 capris
1 skirt
1 less formal dress
2 formal dresses
3 pants
8 shirts
1 cardigan
1 rain coat
underwear
shoes
flip flops
dress shoes
sneakers
flats

ETS: I have two small kids so the chance that I am going to have something spilled or thrown up onto my clothing is extremely high. If I was going with just DH, I would re-wear the black dress pants. Unfortunately I don't foresee that option available for me.

Re: Packing for Cruise

Just got back from my cruise.
Pack for warm weather and nothing wrong with wearing something twice.
We had two 'formal' nights, and I wore the same basic black dress, once with a dressy cardigan, once without.

Don't pack an iron though, it will not be allowed on board because it is a fire hazard. Clothing steamers are ok.

Agreed. I used to pack sooo much. But I've cut down now. Now for nights at dinner I'll pack 2 pairs of pants and different tops/sweaters for every night. Nobody notices a simple pair of black pants and you wear them what - 2 hours a night? We get dressed, goto dinner, come back to the room and put our shorts back on. Not abig deal...

Re: Packing for Cruise

When you board the cruise ship, they take your luggage from you and deliver it to your room once the cruise has left port. So if you want to dress up for dinner or something, make sure you bring it in your carryon. One cruise we didn't get our luggage until after dinner so it was good I had a change of clothes in my carryon so I didn't smell like sunscreen and chlorine.

pack lots of bathing suits and cover ups for those days on the beach or lounging my the pool on the ship. You can freely wear your bathing suits around the decks; but will need cover ups when you go inside (to eat, organized activities etc). Also-since you're leaving from NYC; you might want to pack a sweater; shawl for the night since it might be cool in the evenings until you get down to the Caribbean.

Otherwise; pack lots of skirts; capris; sun dresses for casual dinner nights; and depending on how many formal nights (and if you choose to dress up) then a cocktail dress or nice pants & top.

Definitely lots of sunscreen! It's really expensive to buy on the ship or in port. Have fun!
