Everything goes into accounts for them and we don't touch it but I could see your rationale.

I think that when my parents had a party for me like communion, christening or something they used the money to pay for the party and then gave me all the bonds and what not because I never got that money but I'm sure they used it for the many things I was able to have/do. My grandparents kept a separate account that they would put $ in for us for our b-days and holidays, again not much. I think after like 12 years there was barely $1,000 in it so I used it to buy my car.
Our dream is to be able to pay for our children to go to college, but if we can't afford it I want to keep this account for her to fall back on. It will only be used for college and if we can pay for it, then I want her to use it towards buying a house. So far we only have the money from her christening but we plan to put a certain amount in from us every few months and add to it with the gifts from other occasions
