Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

great so the fact that I was unable to BF DS, could mean its possibly my fault that he has asthma, eczema and his allergies. That was an awesome article.....Im already aware thatif available BM is best, but I could seriously do without that added guilt that its at least partially my fault that my son has the issues he does, and Oh, that Im also then responsible for the rising cost of healthcare.

I just wanted to add that I dont think this was meant to be another FF v BF debate but maybe once in awhile we can just take it as it is and for those of us who BF and who do it long term its nice to read these articles.

As a mom of an 8 month old who has been EBF since birth and who still wakes 3 times a night to feed, I am tired and reading this made me smile so please dont get upset if you could not / did not BF but take this as a shout out to moms who do BF and who may have had to drag pumps to work in order to BF, have had bouts of mastitis, thrush, blocked ducts etc etc...just once can we just say Yeah to the moms who BF, well done and not see it as a BF V FM debate. The end.Chat Icon

I agree that these type of articles just place more guil on mothers who are already doing the best they can.

MY BP always goes WAY up after I deliver and for several weeks. I am talking 200/90. I end up having to go on really strong meds for it to go down. IF I REALLY wanted to I could have pumped and dumped for 3-4 weeks to keep my supply up until going off the meds but I think that is a lot to ask of someone who is post partum and has crazy high BP.

That said my problem with all these studies is that they are actually "anecdotal" and cannot really prove causation just corrollation.

See, that is the thing. There are PLENTY of moms on here who did BF and whose kids have asthma, allergies etc.

Meanwhile, there are also moms (like myself) who did not BF and their kids have none of those. Like I said correlation does not equal causation.

I know, but the fact is he does have this conditions and by not BFing apparently, I increased his risk, so why there is no definitive way to prove its the cause, I feel badly enough about it, so I dont need people (not ophelia) telling me that I didnt do all I could to prevent it. Im just so tired of it.......we know breast is best, but dont start blaming the worlds woes on me, or make me partly responsible for them bc I couldnt BF.

Nice- except it puts even more pressure on the poor moms who would love to exclusively breastfeed but cannot, no matter WHAT they do, make enough milk to do so.

Sorry but this is a sore point for me. I would have LOVED to exclusively breastfed my babies for six months. I was happy to be able to supplement and at least give them a little bit of protection. Chat Icon

agreed. I couldnt breast feed..DS wouldnt latch and i had no milk come in. (which i never looked into or discussed with my dr. why) but i was a basket case over it for a few weeks.

this article makes bf'ing sound so easy. I wish it were Chat Icon

I think most formula feeders acknowlege this and accept it and call it a day. I don't think most fail to realize that breast milk has properties that make it superior to formula.

.

But what if you don't have ANY breast milk. Formula was far superior to the not ONE drop of milk that came from my breasts.

I don't think that is fair at all.

I give a TON of credit BFers, and I hope that the same credit and respect would be given to FF mothers as well.

I agree with Kate. My boobs didn't work so had there not been formula my DD would have been in serious trouble.

in situations like yours, of course you do what's best for your child and formula is best, but i think this poster is referring to a scientific analysis and comparison between formula and breastmilk vs situational.

I think it kinda goes without saying that Ophelia was NOT referring to Mom's who CANNOT BF.

ETA-I exclusively pumped for my kids and they both have allergies. The one that was BF longer has excema so I don't think it 100% protects ANY babyChat Icon

I mean this with no offense, but no, I dont think we need to "yeah" the moms that BF. We ALL do the best we can, and not one group over the other deserves to be patted on the back. I think we all did a job well done, it was hard on all of us. Its a challenging commitment to BF, but its just as challenging to try and BF and fail and have to live with not being able to do what was best for your DC.

So with all due respect, honestly, I dont think we should cheerlead for one group over another, and celebrate that we all fed our children and are all doing the best we can, despite our circumstances and decision to BF or not.Chat Icon

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

Can't anyone take this article for what it is? It's NOT a knock to those who couldn't BF. It's an educational piece for those who might be on the fence. It's especially important to realize that many of the findings in these types of articles/studies are used to educate new mothers who might be low socio-economic status and generally have children more at risk for health issues.

I BF both my babies to about a year. One has SEVERE allergies. The other is perfectly healthy with no allergies, but has excema. I am happy that I was able to BF, but I knew BFing was not a silver bullet against all health issues.

I couldn't BF, but I don't think that b/c of that I should get a pass, I really, really take offense to the idea that b/c someone chose not to (or failed) BF that they are disregarding the best thing for their baby...it isn't fair.

I agree with eddiesmommy that we are all trying to do the best for our children. And I am glad that this article gave people a boost, the article isn't what offended me, but at the same time, just think about if a FF posted an article about that, the type of uproar it would cause, KWIM?

Interesting article, but, I always take broad statements like that with a grain of salt. If you can EBF then great, but I don't feel guilty at all for formula feeding. In fact, my kids haven't had any of those problems, meanwhile, TWO of my friends who EBF have kids with multiple food allergies and have gotten bronchitis, ear infections, you name it and live at the doctor.

I agree, meh.

kind of tired of hearing rah rah breastfeeding. 10 years ago this wasn't even spoken about.

My 2 cents: First of all, my oldest 3 are all teenagers and yes, breastfeeding was just as popular then as it is now.

And 2nd: this is not an educational article. It's one man's interpretation of a study. If there is one true fact in life it is that numbers can be made to support almost any argument. Someone else can write a blog using the same study stating that breastfeeding is not as effective as previously thought.

Please don't take one man's "suggest that each of these ten conditions is at least slightly less likely in children who were breast-fed." as gospel.

ITA.

I could only BF for a month (DD couldn't latch well), and then pumped for a month. I wish I could have longer, but it is what it is. I think 99% of moms do the best they can do for their kids, and to make others feel guilty is a waste of time IMO.

I do drive a hybrid though.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

I always wonder and maybe some of you moms who tried to BF and it did not work out for you or those of you who went straight to FF.....why do you get so upset over articles like this?

Is it because you believe breast milk is better and you are genuinely upset that you could not BF?

Or
Is it because you feel guilty because you are being told that you should have BF?

I am genuinely wondering what gets people so up in arms over the BF issue.

If a study came out tomorrow saying that FF was better than BF I would still BF as I really enjoy BF and its so much more than just feeding my child for me.

However, I think that it places a lot of fault on those who FF.

I think that is true for anything.

at the end of the day, there is a BEST of everything and then there are varying degrees of "does the job" "good enough" "is almost as good"

I think most formula feeders acknowlege this and accept it and call it a day. I don't think most fail to realize that breast milk has properties that make it superior to formula.

anyway, I gotta go. hopefully this won't require a visit from the Pontiff.

First...LOL

Second, I tend to agree, I FF only, for a multitude of reasons from I cannot BF to just pure need, want etc...BUT I do believe BF is best , it's proven and I'm just secure enough to know, I'm not a bad mother b/c I dont BF....But in the end the facts dont lie. No sense in getting defensive, as no one is pointing a finger at me kwim?

i think its an unfair question, but to answer, for me at least its a mix of both. I have guilt that I wasnt able to do what was best for my DS despite my best efforts. I dont think any of that FF will argue that formula is better than BM, its not. But for those of us who wanted so badly to give our child what was best for them are both genuinely upset that we couldnt breastfeed bc we know that BM is better and with that comes guilt that we would have loved to BF, but couldnt.

FTR, THIS article is not offensive to me at all..

I believe that because moms are made to feel like they are not doing the right thing for their child by not BFing that is what causes all of the upheaval about it.

Yes, there are benefits to BFing, but BFing v. FFing is NOT that much different that women should be made to feel like they are doing something wrong by their (tiny) baby

This article is not what I think got people upset.. And I think that those moms who BF are doing an awesome job.. just like those of us who FF are doing an awesome job... there is no question that BF has its benefits... and is cheaper.. less damaging to the earth.. blah blah.. but to me.. it seems like some bf'ing moms look down upon us ff moms as doing whats convenient.. or easy... when sometimes its out of our hands.. or what works best for us... It is clear to me that some bf moms think that I am just lazy and uncommitted to doing what is best for my child... (not directed to anyone here in particular... but to people I have run into.. including my own mother...) But it was what was best for us...

ok.. end of my vent...
