Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

Really interesting isn't it. And another thing that I'm sure people wouldn't dare talk about is the environmental reason to BF - think about how much money and resources a 90% BFing rate would save! Bottles, packaged formula, water used to wash, electricity used to sterilize, etc, etc...!

we are killing the earth to make our lives easier. it's really quite simple (and I am quite guilty in other ways I am sure). but yeah, we definitely won't have any real conversations about it...it's too much to own up to.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

Nice- except it puts even more pressure on the poor moms who would love to exclusively breastfeed but cannot, no matter WHAT they do, make enough milk to do so.

Sorry but this is a sore point for me. I would have LOVED to exclusively breastfed my babies for six months. I was happy to be able to supplement and at least give them a little bit of protection. Chat Icon

I am one of those moms. I have had to supplement Luce since day 1. Chat Icon

I don't think it takes away from that at all. at least I don't look at it like that. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have to supplement as well, not by choice. I think this article is great for some information, but it places a lot of mom guilt. Some woman simply can't EBF, and some simply choose not to. There is nothing wrong with either.

Very interesting! I EBF and it is nice to be reminded of the benefits.

However, I think that it places a lot of fault on those who FF.

I think that is true for anything.

at the end of the day, there is a BEST of everything and then there are varying degrees of "does the job" "good enough" "is almost as good"

I think most formula feeders acknowlege this and accept it and call it a day. I don't think most fail to realize that breast milk has properties that make it superior to formula.

anyway, I gotta go. hopefully this won't require a visit from the Pontiff.

I too have to supplement. I hate it. I wish i was able to EBF Will. He gets about 8-10 oz of formula a day in addition to breastmilk

Oh, well...I tried and was persistent as I could be without losing my sanity and it still didn't work for us. And yes, it's a lot more expensive the way I did it, but I finally came to terms with the fact that it wasn't going to happen. I think it's awesome for those it comes naturally to.

I agree. I did everything possible to EBF. Even my mother didn't understand why I couldn't produce enough (I was EBF as a child). I agree and think the article is great and before I had DD I would have said "I will EBF no matter what". Not realizing sometimes it's just not possible. Good to read, hard to hear (over and over again)

I have to say I agree. I think BF is great, and I would have loved to do it, but for medical reasons I was only able to produce about 2 ounces a day, so DD was supplemented from day 1.

I understand promoting breastfeeding, and breast is best, etc. But I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels like I'm constantly reminded of how I failed my daughter. Chat Icon

Meh..

This like all of these studies is basically just highlighting to effect of more people doing one thing. That same breastfeeding mom might be driving a gas guzzling car and not recycling.

Some people breastfeed, some drive hybrids, some use disposable diapers, some just make sure to recycle ... we all do what we can.

What wasn't spoken about? breastfeeding? Women have been breastfeeding since the beginning of time - long before formula was invented.
I'm not sure I understand your point.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding

I love reading stuff like this! It makes me feel even better for my decision to BF! So many people have given me a hard time for it, so much so that I have had to lie about it just so I wouldn't hear rude comments! But when I read or hear about all of the great positives, it makes me so happy! Thanks for posting!

.

But what if you don't have ANY breast milk. Formula was far superior to the not ONE drop of milk that came from my breasts.

I don't think that is fair at all.

I give a TON of credit BFers, and I hope that the same credit and respect would be given to FF mothers as well.

Thanks for sharing. My son is 8 months and EBF. He has food allergies and I am on a very limited diet. I have wanted to give up so many times, but reading articles like this is what keeps me going.

I agree with Kate. My boobs didn't work so had there not been formula my DD would have been in serious trouble.

Hence why the breastfeeding rate in the US was so low then and only slowly increases now.
