I am also gone for 12 hours a day. I'll be working from home one day a week- Friday's. Than we'll have DC in daycare 3 days a week (12 hour days) and my mom will watch the baby one day a week. It is what it is, but I'm happy with our arrangements.

That's great that you will be able to break it up like that! It's still too early to have the conversation with my boss. but I'm praying that they will let me work from home at least one day a week. If not, I think I might seriously have to consider switching jobs and finding something local. Chat Icon

I'm hoping I can work from home 2-3 days. Chat Icon Chat Icon

If not - I may quit & look for something closer to where we live a couple of days a week.

At least I'll make some $$ to put towards spending & saving.

My day is a 12 hour day too.. at this point we're planning that I will drop baby off at daycare at 7am and DH will pick up at 6pm.
There's no other way to make things work. Unfortunately DH and I both work in a profession where there are no jobs on Long Island for us. We have no choice but to work in NYC.

I feel the same way!! I love what I do, but being away from home for 12 hours a day on top of being sleep deprived just doesn't seem worth it to me!
I also think about the monthly commutor costs and I'm sure I can think of MANY other things that I spend that $300+ on for DC.

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

We are temporarily living in Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn) and our commute has been cut in half (at most it takes us 20-30 minutes to get to work). We are house hunting on LI and it makes me sad to think when the baby comes I will be going back to a long commute. I would LOVE to stay in Brooklyn but it's soooo $. So to answer your question...I have no idea how I'm going to handle it. Chat Icon

ETS...I do plan on working from home 1-2 days a week so that will help a bit.

I will be working from home one day a week. I would love to push it to 2, but I don't know if they would go for that. DH will be home with DD 2 days and she will probably go to daycare 2 days. My parents live close enough that they can help us out with babysitting. Come March/April 2011, I am leaving my job for one on LI. I have worked in NYC for way to long and I am ready to make the change. DH and I are getting everything together now to make that happen. I cannot wait!!!!

I will be doing the same thing. DH will drop the baby off at 7:30 and I will pick up the baby by 4:30-5ish. I have come to grips with the fact that this is how it is. I just don't want to hear everyone elses' opinions on our decision. Like we actually want it this way..

It's tough. I just started back to work 3 weeks ago and I'm gone 12 hours a day. DH is home with the baby 2-3 days a week and the other days he's in daycare.

I hate being gone so long during the week but, I get one day at home as well and I live for the weekends.

I get a nice amount of vacation though so it makes my commute worth it a little more.

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

I commute from Eastern Nassau to the Bronx everyday...it's over an hour commute. I also do home care in the evening so I am usually out of the house for 12 hours everyday.

I am thinking about possibly switching my hours when I return to work to try to avoid some of the rush hour traffic. I am going to try to work 7-3 if I can...I will also stop doing the home care for a little while so that I can be home earlier. Our plan is that DH will drop the baby off at daycare and if I switch my hours I will be home early enough to pick him up.

It's still going to be hard....I don't know how I am going to manage waking up and leaving for work that early everyday...ultimately, I may have to look into a new job.

I knew my FT job in the city had no flexibility, so before I got pregnant I wound up getting a job on LI, taking a pay cut of course. I really don't know how people do it working in the city and having a family Chat Icon

I plan on trying to get a transfer, hopefully i get it. I leave my house at 6:30am and is back at 7Pm I can't imagine spending so much time away from DC.
If I dont get a transfer I will try to work from home at least once a week. DH is off on Mondays so DC will be in day care 3 days/week.

This is going to be difficult for me too. We bought our house as close to the city as we could afford to cut down on commuting time and day care expenses. Luckily, my schedule is pretty flexible, letting me start later in the day and giving me the ability to coordinate it closely with the train schedules. Also, my DH works in construction, so he gets home earlier.

I plan on dropping my daughter off around 8:15 am and DH will pick her up at 4pm. This is the best that we can do with our schedules.

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

I leave my house at 7 and get home at 7. I am Chat Icon that my boss will let me cut down to 4 days a week and change my hours the other days. (Ideally, I'd like to work M-Th from 7 -3.) DH will stay home w/ the kids on Mondays so they will just be in daycare on Tues through Thurs from 7:30 - 4:30.

I went to look at 1 daycare last week and left there crying hysterically. It kills me that we have to leave the kids in daycare, but we don't have much of a choice right now.

I thought I would start driving into Brooklyn instead of paying $370+ for the LIRR. Big mistake! It took me 2.5 hours to get home last Thursday! The train would have taken 1.5 hours door to door. Chat Icon Plus I left work at 3pm that day thinking there wouldn't be traffic. Chat Icon

Ideally, I'd love to stay at my job. Hopefully I can work something out so I can stay. I've been putting off that ackward conversation with my boss for weeks now. Chat Icon

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

I've been doing this for about 6 mos now and I'm not going to lie, I HATE it. We lived in the city until DS was 2 so I was spoiled with him being 4 subway stops away but now I leave at 6am and get home at 6:30pm. Luckily he goes to bed at 9pm now but for a long time, he went to bed at 7-7:30pm and I'm hoping this baby doesnt do the same or I'll never see him/her Chat Icon I am going to try to work one day a week from home when I go back from maternity leave.

We have a nanny from 8am to 6:30pm. DH goes in later and stays later and I front loaded my hours to somewhat minimize the time DS was without one of us.

It sounds like lots of you plan to work from home 1 day a week... How on earth are you going to get any work done? It's hard to focus and work from home as it is (for me), so once the baby comes, it's going to be close to impossible!

This is such a tough decision!! I still have a lot of time to decide, but it's always in the back of my mind.

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

I have an 12 hour day. I leave in the morning at 530am and get home at 530pm. It is hard. DH drops her off at daycare and I pick her up. There is no way I can work from home because I am a teacher. With DD I just accepted that we'd only have 2.5 hours a day together at night. The commute sucks but luckily my DH and my mom are close to home so if DD gets sick they can pick her up....

Still not sure how I am going to handle 2 and commute into the city. Chat Icon

I plan to do it while the baby is still young. Once the baby is mobile I will get a mommy's helper to come in for the day.

If I work a day from home, I will have my nanny come like on a regular day. I've had to work from home a few times when she called in sick and it is VERY difficult (if not impossible) to get done everything I need to get done without someone else watching DS.

Re: Future Mommies who commute to NYC for work.

I just want to say to all you women who do this you deserve a pat on the back. Its soo tough living on L.I. and working in the city. My DH does it everyday a 3 hr commute. He is usually gone for 14-15 hrs a day. He is trying to convince his bosses to let him work earlier so he can leave earlier but in this economy no one wants to push too hard.

ITA - it is difficult. I've had to do it one day and he senses the second you need to do something!

He's either in daycare on my work from home day or my DH, mom or MIL watches him.

It's nice though to be able to spend more time with him in the morning and afternoon and throw in laundry and run errands while I'm home. I also tend to get a lot more work done because people don't want to bother me while I'm working at home.
