Re: any cape owners out there with 2 or more children

I grew up in a cape with two bedrooms upstairs and two downstairs...and I am one of 4!

My parents had their bedroom on the main floor and the smaller bedroom downstairs was always the nursery. When we got older, we got shifted upstairs. We eventually all ended up upstairs...2 girls in one room and 2 boys in the other. I believe our upstairs was partially dormered come to think of it. The smaller bedroom, former nursery, became the computer room/TV room

Anyway we eventually moved because we all outgrew the rooms. My 6'5 brother just wasnt cutting it on the bunkbeds anymore lol.

Same here. All 4 kids were upstairs, the 2 girls shared a room, and so did the 2 boys (and it was TINY). One bathroom for 6 people. We all survived and grew up to be fairly well adjusted people. Chat Icon

You'll make it work. I actually think having to share a room and a bathrom with 5 other people helped make me more considerate. If you used all the hot water, someone (usually my mom) would get a cold shower. I had little to no trouble with roommates in college because I already learned how to share a room with someone.

My BIL and SIL are in the same situation as you, except with 3 little boys.

They have their bedroom downstairs and the other bedroom was the nursery. As the boys got older they moved upstairs and turned the nursery into a play room. Now the eldest (age 7 1/2) has his own room upstairs and the 2 youngest (5 and 2 1/2) share a room. They are not dormered either and they do not have a bathroom upstairs.

They are outgrowing it though are are looking to either dormer or move (they are leaning greatly on the moving option tho)

i grew up in a cape with one sister and two parents and two dogs. we had a dormer when i was older, middle school. honestly i didn't feel crowded and liked sharing a room with my sister. as for whether my parents felt crowded, who knows, i'm sure they did. try not to stress. if anything it'll force you to live as clutter free as possible, yes? and if things get really hard maybe you can rent a storage unit or ask a family member to lend you a corner of their basement or garage if you don't have one....

you'll be just fine - you'll make it work! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have a 4 bedroom cape. Our bedroom is upstairs and the boys are both in the same bedroom upstairs. The downstairs bedrooms are an office/library and a workout room. One day, we anticipate that the boys will not want to be upstairs together. We will probably turn their playroom (the basement into a living space for one or both of them. It's a huge basement.

ETA: We do have a bathroom upstairs but it's rarely used.

I grew up in a Levitt ranch (more or less like a cape): 2 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs. When we originally moved into the house, my parents' room was downstairs and my sister and I shared the other tiny downstairs bedroom. My parents went on to have 3 other children. The two boys shared an upstairs room, my sister and I shared the other upstairs room, and my little sister has her own room next to my parents.

At one point, we even had my aunt living with us.

Trust me - if you need to make it work you will. Plus - we only had one bathroom!

me!!
we have an undormered cape- 2bdrms up and one down. with 3 children.
thankfully our living space (kit, dr, lvngrm) is a decent size. we really only use our bedrooms for sleeping.
our oldest dd has her own room (the smaller of the 2 upstairs). dh & i used to shared the bigger room upstairs with our youngest son(for his first year of life) and middle DS slept in his bed"room" area (the foyer). Now that the littlest is older, DH and i moved downstairs and the boys share the big room. we have a video monitor thats on all night. my middle son sleeps on the couch b/c he is afraid of monsters.
