Re: Small house decor pics

One idea for small places is to double purpose items. So for the LR/DR combo-You could use a low piece that has shelving on both sides to seperate the space-a buffet with storage..or an open shelving piece. Us your up space(floor to ceiling)

I don't know our square feet, but our house is SMALL! Apartmenttherapy.com is a good site for small space ideas, esp. kitchen stuff.

We have even less than that. Chat Icon

In our living room, we purposely bought a low-profile couch with a chaise section so we could have more seating room without it looking closed in. Light colored walls in each room (except bedroom where DH overruled me) and white ceilings draw your eye up.

We used to have coffee tables in the middle, we took them out and I use them as bookshelves now. We also got a flat panel TV and mounted it on the wall, which opens the space up.

You could use shelves on the walls for more storage, even above the bathroom door if you have the height. You could put extra TP, etc up there.

We definitely are concentrating on minimalist aspects to not clutter. We don't have enough on our walls but when we do, we won't go too far with it.

Also, mounting lighting to walls and ceilings helps, so you don't take up horizontal surfaces for things.

If I think of anything else, I will let you know. Chat Icon

Re: Small house decor pics

I have an even smaller house too! Thank goodness for our (thus far unfinished) basement. We also have an attic, so I hope that all of that storage space will keep us from ever closing ourselves in with too much stuff.

We stayed away from dark colors and try to keep things from being too cluttered. I also tried to make sure the colors and decor of the rooms "flow" - we have the same color hardwood floor throughout (it's a ranch house, and the floors are the color we found when we ripped up the carpet!), and our paint choices sort of transition into each other. We kept all the trim work consistent too. Hoping that having a good flow will create the illusion of more space!

I love the Young House Love blog! They always have great ideas and their house is pretty small too.

Re: Small house decor pics

If you do a search I just posted pics of our house recently. We are going to be selling it because I want more kids and we only have two bedrooms, but we really have done well with the small space thus far!!!!!

Re: Small house decor pics

We had a small house - It was a 3 bedroom and 1 bathroom 1100 sq ft levitt cape with no basement. I have pictures of what it used to look like....before we did the dormer if you want to see.

We were lacking storage before, but made do with what we had by use of storage shelves in the garage, and storage shelving in the one big closet that we had downstairs.

Re: Small house decor pics

We have a Hi-Ranch with an apartment on the 1st floor with our Family Room on the 1st floor also. So our house is a little bit bigger then yours.

We have a LR/DR/Kitchen combo or Great Room. All walls are the same color.

LR:
- sofa
- large entertainment center
- storage ottoman, w/tray and w/two smaller ottomans for extra seating.
- two end tables

DR:
- large table w/two leaves. can sit up to 10 people
- four mirrors that look like a window to make the space feel bigger.

Kitchen:
- tall cabinets (36" & 42" tall)
- one upper cabinet is our china cabinet
- island has three base cabinets, one is for garbage & recyling
(try to buy organization pieces for your cabinets at Bed Bath & Beyond to help organize your cabinets better)

Bathroom:
- organize your drawers if you have them with drawer dividers or baskets that fit.
- organize cabinets also.

Master Bedroom:
- put closet organizer in.
- storage under bed that you can pull out easily.

2nd & 3rd bedrooms are just spare rooms right now. But I would like to put closet organizers in them as well.

Family Room:
- we have a storage area under our stairs
- we have one large closet and we put a closet organizer in it from Ikea.
- we have a sofa in the middle of the long room to break up the room into a TV area & dining area.
- console table under TV houses componets and other storage.
- ottoman/table is storage
- large mirror on opposite wall of the windows.

Check out all my albums to see what I have done in my home.

If you can upload pics of your home or let us know what you are having problems with, maybe we can help more. There is organization for everything. Each piece can have double duties in your home. Let us help. Chat Icon
