Re: Spinoff to starter home

We just closed on our house in January with the full intention that this will be our starter home (3-5 years tops). It has 4 bedrooms (on the smaller side) and 1.5 bathrooms. Since purchasing the house we have demo the house completely. We are installing a brand new kitchen and bathrooms and knocked down a couple of walls and everything is brand new. So the more time I put into the house, and I am picking out everything to my liking....I dont know if I will be ready to move in 3-5 years. Maybe we will stay a bit longer. The house is definitely big enough to start a family...so we will see where the future brings us.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

Forever Home

We just cant see putting so much work and love into something to leave it all behind. We choose a house that has the potential for many things. Its a 4 bedroom home, enough for us to have kids here. We live in a wonderful neighborhood with great schools. Also DH will be starting a private practice in our home and we dont see what the point would be to establish a buisness to then move it.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

starter...we planned to stay here 5 years....that was 5 years and 2 months ago.

We have plans to put an addition on our current home but that might be falling through right now in which case we will be looking within the year.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

Because of the location and community, this is our forever home. It's smaller than we wanted but we are looking forward to building it up (it's a ranch) and renovating the entire inside, and making it our own. We never want to leave Chat Icon I actually joked with DH that even if we won the lotto, I'd stay here and just buy a vacation home elsewhere Chat Icon

We are DEFINITELY in a starter home.

Our house is a tight 1200 sq. ft., and with an 8 month old DD and another baby due in July, we are just overflowing out of this house. I can't wait to get into something bigger. I would say the next house we buy would hopefully be our "forever home."

Starter home..... then we liked the neighborhood, and didn't feel like moving, so we doubled the size of the house, and made it our "forever" home... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to starter home

Well some consider it a starter home, 3 bedroom, 1 bath ranch but it has become our forever home as we have owned it for almost 14 yrs. and not looking to move anytime soon.
I don't see a need to move when I can have a low(er) mortgage and pay less in utilities.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

Our house was originally what most people would call a starter home. It was a 3 bedroom with 1 bathroom, and one of the bedrooms was so small that it wasnt really a good sized room so we used it for storage. After looking around for a bigger home in a different area, and not being able to find anything that we liked, we decided to expand and redo our home into what we would want in a home at our stage in life. Although it has been a long and stressful time, I know in the end it will worth it and our kids will love growing up in this house.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

We started in a 1-bedroom condo when we got married, and then moved to a 3 bed, 2 bath ranch. I love our house, but if we win the lotto/make tons of money I'd like to move to a colonial in a slightly better town in our same school district. We spent $$$ to get into the school district we wanted, knowing that we'll probably be here when DC are in school.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

We bought a co-op first and sold it after 2 years to move into our "forever home".

We were actually looking for a starter home, thinking that's all we would be able to afford, and then we found a house with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, nice yard, basement, garage, etc....so we bought it!

It needs work, but that's what we wanted, since we knew we wanted to make it our own anyway. It's been 3 years, and it's a work in progress....but I wouldn't change a thing!

Re: Spinoff to starter home

This could be our forever home, we'll see.

But, we were 33 when we bought this house. If we were younger and just starting out we would have bought a starter home or a condo but for us it made sense to buy a home we could live in long term if not forever and this fits the bill.

ETA: I also think a lot of people are jumping right into a forever home. It used to be you could buy a starter home and trade up based on appreciation of that home. This isn't as easy any more so many people seem to buy with the thought of being in the home long term or, conversly, bought a few years ago with the hope of trading up but can't due to the changed economic conditions. Hopefully, this is temporary.

Forever home, although we may relocate at some point in the future (but hopefully we'll be able to keep this house too).

im not quite sure.. we bought a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath high ranch. it has a finished den on the bottom level as well as a 1 bedroom apartment on 1/3 acres and a pool..

i guess what im saying is that if NEED BE we will be comfortable in this house forever but we would eventually want something larger once we start to have a family.

Starter Home.......... but if I HAD to stay, I could. The schools are great but the square footage is smaller than I'm comfortable with.

Ours is definitely a started. We got a great deal and put a lot of work into it, but I can see us outgrown it.
We can always add, but I don't see myself staying there in the long run.

Re: Spinoff to starter home

hard to say....the house is a cape and was sold with 4 bedrooms. we knocked down the wall by the staircase to make it a living room and the other one is an office/guest room. that leaves 2 real bedrooms upstairs. we don't have any kids, so we'll start with one and see what happens....i'm not getting any younger, so a huge family seems out of the question. we're updating the house to what we like/need/want now and will figure the rest out as we go!
