Going back to work after Baby is born....

My husband thinks I should stay home after the baby is born, but i am worried that it will hit us harder than he thinks financially.... Just wondering how many of you currently working full-time, will not go back or will cut down hours after the baby is born.

We keep going back and forth with this. Ideally I would like to stay home especially since what I make would just go to daycare costs and I would much rather be home with the baby then sending him to daycare. I'm trying to finagle a way to work from home, what I do could definitely be done remotely, but I just don't know if my company would do it.....

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I am going back 5 months after the baby is born. I work in the schools, so i get an extra 2 months with the summer. The 12 weeks carries over, but not paid after my recovery period (6-8 weeks). I'm sure I will hate going back to work, but I can't complain when I only work 180 days per year. Financially, at this point I need to go back to work, but hope to take more time with #2.

I am definitely going back after 12 weeks. I am a full-time graduate student and will hopefully be wrapping up my PhD around 6 months after going back.

Afterwards though I am not sure what I will be doing as far as a career. I am thinking of becoming a full-time lecturer so that my schedule will be really flexible. Only time will tell!

I'll go back after 12 weeks. It just isn't financially possible for me to be a SAHM. Even it was an option I don't think that I'd be willing give up my career. I work in the technology industry and being away for an extended period of time would really hurt.

Same here, I work in tech/media and a year or two off would ruin my career

Going back in 4/5 months

This is exactly my situation. We could live on DH's paycheck, but wouldn't be comfortable. However, I don't want to go to work to hand over my paycheck to daycare. I'd rather stay home with my baby at that point.

I can work from home as well, just not sure my company will go for it. Hoping they will compromise with 3 days home, 2 days in the office.

Plus I'm due a big salary adjustment so depending on whether or not that goes into effect by the time I have DC will play a BIG role on our final decision.

I REALLY want to stay home the full 12 weeks..but I might stay home 8 weeks and then go back part time for the next 4 weeks then return full time.

DH is begging me to stay home. He will realize financially its better I go back!

I am going back after 12 weeks. DH thinks that I can stay out a year, as you can tell - I am the one in charge of the bills and finances LOL he has no idea.

Back to work for me! I am praying that I can work something out w/ my job where I can cut back my days or hours so I don't have to pay for daycare for 2 kids.

We unfortunately can't live on just DH's paycheck----especially since his job doesn't give him health insurance.

I like being a working mother, and I think that the childcare situation I chose for my son made him a very well rounded confident, not to mention happy child. After this baby, I will go back to work, albeit part time. However it won't be for at least a year. My job has to hold my position or a similar one for a year.

I am hoping to be a WAHM. I am trying to do freelance legal work from home-unless DH gets a much higher paying job, it is not in the cards for me.

I can do my job from home, and my mom can watch the baby 2 days a week... but they won't let me work 2 days from home and 3 in the office they say if they do it for 1 they have to be flexible with all.... Ultimately we could live and still be comfortable on DH's income - however he is on commission so until his deals close he doesn't get paid - which in many cases can take a few months. My company pays 100% of my medical so if I stay full time thats almost $500 a month on top of my salary which would atleast pay our mortgage so its one less thing to worry about. I am torn!

I am not a teacher but work in a school setting. We really tried to plan for a summer baby and luckily it worked out for us - we are due 7/8. I will be returning to work in September (we can not financially swing it any other way) but instead of 5 full days I think I am only going to go back 4 full days. We still have to figure everything out but this is the idea we have been tossing around.

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I work 3 nights a week now, and will be a SAHM during the day, and just decrease my shifts to 2 nights a week, 3-11!!! DH will be home with the baby those 2 nights. I plan on taking off at least 6 or 8 weeks after the baby is born, then go back 2 nights!

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I had the pipe dream that I could stay home after DS was born two years ago....after staying home with him for 5 months it hit me hard that that was NOT reality....

Only you know your finances to say for sure, but if you live on LI you know as well as we do that it is VERY difficult.

Without daycare, it was costing me a fortune in diapers, wipes, formula and clothes for the baby every month!

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I'll be going back 16 weeks after, full time, same as with DS#1.

Ideally, I would love to work 3-4 days but I'm just not in the type of position where that is possible.
