Sleep related....what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?

My DD is almost 7 weeks old. I EBF her. The past few nights at around 9PM she is exhausted. I feed her....change her and since she needs my boob as a pacifier....i give it to her again as she falls asleep. I have tried to stop this but...its impossible. Anyways....as soon as I put her in her crib she starts hysterical crying. I let her cry a little bit....but when she starts with that "I can not breathe why aren't you saving me cry" i go in and rock her back to sleep....and the vicious cycle continues until 11!!!! I am going crazy!!!!

What am I doing wrong? What can I do to stop this? Is this normal behavior for a 7 week old?

I think it's pretty normal. I know it's frustrating! I know you're swaddling, do you have a white noise machine in the room? That really helped all my kids sleep.

Another idea is to try waiting a little longer before putting her down. She may not be in a deep enough sleep when you're trying to put her in the crib.

This too shall pass!Chat Icon

It's normal....you need to give her a pacifier, or go in to soothe her. I know it's frustrating....but at 7 weeks, they're too young to understand what's going on.

Imagine you fell asleep in your bed, and you woke up on the couch....you'd freak out too, wouldn't you? That's pretty much what they're going through....they fall asleep and you're right there all warm and comforting, and they wake up all alone in a strange place.

Don't be afraid of starting bad habits at this age...when she's older and understands more, you can be tough. Now is the time to cuddle and comfort.

I do swaddle her and she sleeps with the "sleep sheep"...do you think i need something stronger and louder than the Sleep Sheep?

I just want to make sure this is normal behavior and that I'm not doing something wrong.

I DO DESPERATELY NEED A BINKY!!!!! I have tried every brand out there!!!

definitely, 7 weeks is too young to let her cry to sleep, shes just not developmentally capable yet to put herself to sleep, that develops between 4-6 months, so go in and soothe her, dont worry Chat Icon

Its also totally normal for them to spit the paci out at this age, but they get the hang of it.

oh also about the sleep sheep, does she seem to wake up once the noise stops? thats the one thing I hated about it dd would wake up when the noise stopped so we got a noise machine.

Yup!

And I agree with the swaddle, pacifier (have you tried the first years Soothies?) Sleep Sheep (you don't need anything louder as that is pretty loud, especially if it's close for their sensititve ears). Also, you may want to read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. This book really helped me to UNDERSTAND sleep and at what ages you should sooth, Cry It Out, Train, etc... 7 weeks you can not spoil them/train them/ etc.

I cannot believe she's 7 weeks already too! Time is going by way too fast! She is not waking up after the sleep sheep turns off...so i guess that's good for now. Thanks for the book recommendation! I will be ordering it from Amazon ASAP!

Re: Sleep related....what am I doing wrong?!?!?!?

You can't spoil a newborn. Does she sleep in the crib at all? DS wouldn't sleep in the crib. We tried everything. Whether we put him in awake or asleep, he woke up immediately and was hysterical. We ended up co-sleeping b/c that was the only way we'd get any sleep. Hopefully you'll find something that works for you. Chat Icon
