should we go cheap or splurge?
We are currently in the process of building a bonus room downstairs. It will basially be an everything room- tv room, play room, office. We are also putting in a small half bath. The project is already costing us close to $10K. And now we need to make a decision about carpet. I had a carpet guy (my friends DH) come over with samples and we're leaning towards a burber- which would run us about $1800- quite a bit more then we realized carpet costs. Then we went to Lowes. Their custom order stuff would be roughly the same, if not a little less. But if we purchased something in stock, it would cut the cost down to about $700-800. That's a BIG price difference. By buying in stock we have much less options and the quality isn't that great, but we could litterally replace the carpet in a few years for the same price as getting the expensive one now. So what would you do? Splurge on the expensive one, or cut some corners and save some money?

The best advice I ever got regarding carpet buying is that if you go with a lesser expensive carpet, spend a little extra on a nice thick padding

That's what we were going to do- get the premium padding.

With little kids around, I'd go with the cheap stuff. Then replace it when they're older and not as messy. I'd hate living with something that I'm always afraid of DD making a mess on. (not that i let her bring messy stuff on the carpet anyway, but you know what I mean)

I completely agree. You can replace when the kids are older and save the money now.

Cheap stuff until the kids are grown. i've learned my lesson the hard way.
they will (can) literally ruin your carpet within two years.

Since your kid(s) are so young - I'd go cheap and replace when they are older.

Re: should we go cheap or splurge?
I would look into carpet tiles. If one area gets damaged or worn down, you don't have to replace the entire carpet. They don't actually stick to the floor either so it's not like you're peeling them up.
How long will the expensive carpet last? Is there a warranty? If it's supposed to be longer wearing, I'd jus get that if you can afford it so you don't have the hassle of having to replace the carpet in a few years.

I agree - good padding can make any carpet feel good. Go with stock and get the premium padding.
