Installing Flat Screen TV's...

We have a flat screen TV that is a few years old - still in good condition. We want to buy a wall mount from Costco for it and put it above our fireplace (in the place we are getting). DH *hates* the idea of any cords showing.

A couple of questions:

Can anyone recommend someone who can install this and hook it up so that no wires are showing?? (we want it snaked it through the wall)

Also, if we put the wall mount piece up now and then in a few years we want to update the TV can we just take the TV off, unhook the cords, and then put the new TV up there or will we need a whole new wall mount and install??

Lastly, those of you that have this set up - where do you put your cable box, DVD player, etc??

Here is a pic of the fireplace. There is a little spot on the side to the left of the fireplace that we might be able to put a small cabinet for the Cablebox and DVD Player if they can snake the cords and have them come out on that side -- Is that a realistic idea??

Does it really have to go over that fireplace?

Re: Installing Flat Screen TV's...

1- an electrician would have to do the wiring. Cable providers aren't 'permitted' to snake the cords through the wall.

2- So long as the new tv is around the same size as the original tv- the same wall mount should work. Wall mounts are rated for weight, which is related to the size of the tv. If you get a tv that is substantially larger; you'll need a new mount

3- we got a mini shelf from Target to put our cable box on. They have multi level shelves to mount on the wall so that you can place dvd players, game consoles, cable boxes on them.

HTH!!

Wall mounts are rated for weight, but also by bolt pattern (typically called VESA). It's not a definite that a new TV will fit the same mount. The main thing is the wiring anyways as that is what costs the most regarding the install and that shouldn't change.

One thing when you do this install, maybe sure the electrician puts an outlet on that wall behind the TV. Do NOT let any installer snake a TV power cord behind the wall. It's against fire code (regardless of what they may say)... and it will void your homeowners insurance if you have to make a fire claim.

This is how we did ours in our condo before we moved (my husband installed it). He snaked the wires down the left side into the console where we had the reciever, cable box, etc.

We just set up a wireless system in our house. DH was able to do it by himself and we bought everything at Costco and 6th Avenue Electronics. I don't think it was that difficult to do. The boxes are all in a closet in our basement.

Oh the mini shelf idea is great. Did you do this? Do you have a pic?

Where exactly should I put that little mini shelf? on the side?

Thanks for the info everyone - I didn't even think about the fire hazard about going behind the wall. I will DEF have an electrician do it and put an outlet in. MIL has a great electrician who was here a few weeks ago and I liked them - they did great work so I think I'll go with them.

We are not going to buy a much bigger TV when we do - we have a 42 inch now - MAYBE a 46 so I'll get a unit that can hold at least that to be safe. I'll also check out the other specs of it -- it'll be the same brand so hopefully.

Thanks!!!

i am so excited to see this post! we are putting a tv over a fire place and i was curious to see if it was not a good idea considering the fireplace might give off to much heat and melt the tV? but i guess not! :)

Someone did tell me not to put it above my fireplace. They said it was a risk of heat damage and since tvs are so expensive not to risk it.

if its a "real" fireplace as in not gas, you void your warrenty. its really not reccomended if you plan to use a real fireplace. the bricks sometimes get hot. the gas ones are ok though

If you ever need service, take it down from the mount and place it in a separate bedroom on it's original table top stand to have them service it. Problem solved.
