Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
Thank you for writing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, a lot of nice areas have a huge heroin problem. I don't want to go into the details but unfortunatly my family and I know all about this. A young family member passed away and now we talk to so many people about heroin and all the drugs in all the communities. I know Miller Place, Sayville, Bayport-Bluepoint, Smithtown, Sachem, Three Village, Massapequa, Comesqogue, and where I am from-Middle Country has a big heroin problem (just to name a few), and some of the districts such as mine sweep it under the rug. I know Patchogue Med and Sachem have been trying to be proactive about it, but many have not. This is a huge problem that is affecting our teenagers and it needs to be spoken about! It can and WILL happen anywhere! You have to be aware of what your children are doing at all times. I did not buy a house in the district I went because I felt they were dishonest about this. I bought in the next town over, which some say is not a good, but I am happy with my choice. Sorry for rambling, I am just glad someone had the guts to say something!

It really is everywhere. I wonder if sometimes they try to hide it to keep sales of homes up. Like eddiesmommy says, sometimes it is only former younger residents that know of it.
For example, a PP said that Sayville has the same issue, and I had no idea! (I don't really know much about South Shore towns, to be quite honest)
I feel we kind of help each other out here, and it's good to get different perspectives of different towns & the real truths.

I think it has to do a lot with the administration-the principals and superindents, that don't want their reputation to go bad. It is such a shame, I think more on the districts that do talk about opposed to the ones sweeping it under the rug.

I don't think you can go to a town on long island and say there isn't a drug problem...heroin is the big issue right now. It's being addressed in many school districts all over suffolk and nassau counties. I don't think you can pin Heroin as a Smithtown issue.

she is right though, thats its the towns dirty little secret, its all over the news, but no one here talks about it. I bet if you ask my parents or my ILs, who are both still in KP, they would tell you they had no idea. Yet you ask me and my siblings and DH and his sister and we know.......we totally know.
I live in the town...and it is not a secret. Parents are making a huge deal out of it becuase it is such a well known problem in the area and in the schools. You will find drug use in every disctrict among every race, ethnicity, religion and socio-economic status. Drug abuse is an epidemic that is Island wide. Smithtown folks have been in the news lately b/c they are making a big deal out of it, to educate themselves, their children and others in an effort to eradicate this horrible problem in their community. They recognize the problem and are not keeping it a secret at all....

I meant generation wise......I did say that KP has the "in the know" program and the new generation of parents are well aware of it.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I never really encountered this stuff personally in HS (my crowd was very goody-goody and didn't even drink in HS) but I had a classmate who told me that with one phone call she could have any type of drug she wanted delivered to the parking lot of our HS within an hour. This was in South Bellmore.
I figured people were doing a lot of pot, maybe cocaine, but the heroin thing was new to me until this post. Maybe I was just oblivious...

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
The FACT of the matter is that drugs are a problem in EVERY town/city...anyone who thinks otherwise really is being naive.
Well off people do drugs too.
I grew up in a middle-upper class area of Queens.
I saw kids my age get brand new $40,000 cars when they turned 17. I also saw these same kids strung out on some drug while hanging out at the park or under the bridge.
Over the years I watched as a good chunk of those kids progressed onto harder more expensive drugs. Some even succumbed to the addiction.
They never accomplished much with their lives because Mommy & Daddy handed them their business to run.
So now they have more $$ to spend on drugs & no worries on what they are going to do with their lives.
Again I say - there is a drug problem EVERYWHERE. Some places just hide it better than others.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
Well I don't live in Smithtown, near Smithtown or personally know anyone who lives in Smithtown, but I know there is a drug problem there - so it's not exactly a secret. I live in "beautiful Massapequa" and h*ll yeah there's a drug problem here. We got a letter from the school that they are going to start using drug sniffing dogs in the secondary schools. It scares the eff out of me but I talk about it as much as possible bc I don't like the BS. There was someone selling drugs on my block - a very nice block in a very nice town with very nice houses - and guess what? No one seemed to care at all. The people are now gone but the h*ll, how no one cared was beyond me. The police didn't care, they wanted me to sit there and write down license plate numbers, which I actually did for a bit. But not one person I told seemed outraged, probably just happy it wasn't on their block. Hello? They can sell to people off the block! But more and more, people are starting to address it....I hope to God it's not just more BS. I am glad they are going to implement the use of drug sniffing dogs, maybe it will help clean it up. But the parents have to seriously be on board too, school is only one place. A lot of people don't want to believe it - they give give give their kids (not just the wealthy people) and live their little lives in the bubble but not me. I am very vocal about it and I take in as much info as I can - rather than be scared by it, I try to empower myself. My oldest kid is 7 yrs old...how long till he's offered drugs? I do believe it's everywhere, I'm not sure why it's discussed more in certain areas like Smithtown & Massapequa. 2 things they have in common are that they are large towns with a mix of upper class & middle class. Not sure what the other common denominators are but I hardly believe it's only the towns you hear about. You have to be vigilant about what your goals are in your life, not just what sounds good or what you want to believe. With my kids, I'd rather hear it all, good and bad. I don't care who wants to say anything about Massapequa. If it's true, it's true. So if it's true, how do I protect my kids? Not just with drug sniffing dogs or articles in Newsday. It has to be deeper than that, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to save your kids. Do I have all the answers now, h*ll no but I am willing to call it what it is. My DH thinks I am a cynic sometimes but I am a realist.
*steps down off soapbox*

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
Anyone who thinks that drugs are isolated to one area/town because Newsday did an expose on one specific situation might as well live in Candyland! Or Oz Say HI to the TIN MAN for me! Seriously, Newsday is ridiculous - and I know from PERSONAL experience -- they over exaggerated and fabricated more stuff about Kenneth that I lost count!!!
Drugs are everywhere. I was born in East Meadow - I moved to Smithtown when I was four. I graduated from there - and while I was in school there never, EVER, have I seen a drug, witnessed someone doing a drug, nothing -- not even pot! I've never actually seen it with my own two eyes. When I was in College was the first time I saw people with drugs (at Hofstra University - where my BF at the time attended school).
However, I know enough to know they were probably going on all around me. And in other towns as well. I never saw so many people use and abuse drugs as when I entered College and was dating the Hofstra guy I mentioned above - not him but ALL of his friends did every drug on the table! It was UNBELIEVABLE. I guess I'm somewhat naive because I never saw it before. They were from and lived in Commack. Right next door to where I grew up - next town over from Smithtown. Here I thought, phew Commack's BAD! All these kids do crazy drugs. Then, I realized, there are pockets like that in every town. No place is perfect.
I think it is ridiculous that I can't mention my town which has one of the highest rated SD on the Island and in the State without someone mentioning that Newsday article. What about the girl who died of a Heroin overdose in Plainedge? We forgot about that I guess? Or about the school assembly last night at my husband's district where he teaches - the administration put up on the electronic billboard "HEROIN IS HERE!" and it flashes everyday. They went on for two hours at this assembly about how to "get in the know" about it and see if your kid is using. His district is Hauppauge.
Bottom line, everywhere. Using or not using is up to the person.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I'm confused now, its good and comendable that the people in Smithtown and Kings park recognize the drug problem and have created task forces to handle it, but its horrifying that the people of Mastic and Shirley have created similar task forces to deal with their demons-gangs & sex offenders???
Why aren't we applauding the hard working people of Shirley/Mastic for having their own "in the know" type of program? yesterday there were comments about how its "proof" of how bad the trouble is there.
Yes the situation is more severe in some ways in Shirley and Mastic but it IS being addressed and I've said it before & I'll say it again, everyone has to live somewhere. Not every first time homeowner can afford a $300,000+ house with $10,000 p/year property taxes. Naturally you can't get cavier with a cornbread budget, but again there are nice people in those towns. Its like they can't win for trying down there.

I think a lot of towns have issues. Some bigger than others. I live in Sayville. I love it here.. I am the biggest cheerleader for this town.
But there sure is a heroin problem.
I've decided I can deal with the over-privileged kids making stupid choices as long as the school district is good, the community is strong, the neighborhood is clean and I have the strength to really trust that I am able to teach my kids to make good choices when it's their turn to be confronted with those issues.
We need to look at these places as a whole - not just the pretty stuff - and make realistic decisions.
I still think Smithtown isn't a terrible place to live. Not MY choice.. but a lot of people love it and thrive there.
I never knew that about Sayville...most people paint it as a wonderful family town, which it seems like it is. But thank you for also pointing out an issue.
I hung out with all sayville kids in my Hs days and i would of never considered it a "nice" area. Yes there are nice homes in the town and parks and SD, however almost ever kid i ever meet had a drug or drinking problem. If u needed any drugs sayville was where you found them. I cant speak for it now since i have not hung out there since i was 18 but i do know that the ppl i knew didnt make to much of themselfs, IMO. Agian like someone said be4 its kids w.money and nothing else to do i guess. I dont think this is everyone who lives out there but there was a very big handful of them.
_please dont take offense anyone from this area, I am a frim believer that it dosnt matter where u live its HOW you raise ur child _

Almost every school has a drug problem now a days. connetquot, Middle country, sayville, sachem, it dosnt matter if its a rich or poor school its out there and all we can do is hope n pray we raised our childern to know the danger and harm in drugs... Sadly this is the way things are now. :(

ITA....anyone who feels they are blowing it out of proportion in regards to Smithtown either is (or was) blind.
I think it's hard for people to admit, KWIM?
And I don't need Newsday to sensationalize things...I see drug deals happening at 7/11s, and I've seen needles in parking lots.

I am from Smithtown
It is an epidemic.
I grew up in eastern LI, currently live in central Nassau, and work in southeast Queens. Drug use is an epidemic everywhere. Anyone that thinks that their town is exempt is hallucinating. Rich areas and schools have lots of drugs. Poor areas and schools have lots of drugs and lots of crime. Middle class neighborhoods have a mix. All kids, of all colors, are exposed.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I have kids in school in Smithtown. My oldest is in 7th grade and while there is not a problem in the middle school, my friends with kids at both high schools tell me they know which hallways to avoid.
Frankly, I don't love that, but I am 43 years old and attended a very highly regarded all girls parochial high school and the girl who had the locker next to me was dealing. It wasn't heroin but dealing nonetheless.
I also have friends who teach and/or have kids at very well respected northshore Nassau county districts that tell me heroin is very much a problem there.
But what I find the most troubling is that a good friend of mine is a psychologist with Pedersen Krag and she tells my they have offered to provided free drug awareness/prevention clinics to many Nassau/Suffolk school districts (KP, Commack, Elwood, Northport and Smithtown to name a few) and all have refused. This just leaves me completely confounded. But I guess it all comes down to real estate values. How very sad.

Bottom line, everywhere. Using or not using is up to the person.
I agree that it is everywhere, not just Smithtown. But while Smithtown has always had a percentage of users (as all towns do, it's a matter of statistics), Smithtown has become a place where the heroin usage has become overwhelming in the past few years.
I think it's great Newsday and the administration shines a light on it to be proactive....and yes, using or not is up to the individual, but kids are easily influenced during tender teen years, some are depressed but haven't been clinically diagnosed yet, and reach to drugs to self-medicate.
Please bear in mind that Newsday didn't just do one expose on heroin in Smithtown. They didn't just get bored one slow press day and cultivate this story. Things occurred and they reported on them. Before a news article is written, an event has occurred. Their have been deaths, needles found, and a murder that was related to heroin.
And other LI publications have reported on it in Smithtown, not just Newsday.
Yes, SD is a great district and top-rated, but that doesn't negate the drug use.
IMO, this needs to STAY in the news and kept being brought up until something is done. It can't just be theorized that "Well, it happens everywhere and it's up to a person to use or not."
It's nice that you never experienced/saw/knew anyone in high school who did it, not even pot, but I'd think you were in the minority & very lucky. I don't know when you graduated, but now? It's an epidemic.

actually, there IS a problem in the middle school. and i know bc i student taught there and there was a needle found in the girls bathroom.
the bottom line is, it is everywhere, its just that smithtown SC has the BALLS to draw attention to themselves and run the risk of hurting their stellar reputation for the betterment of their students and community.
my good friend teaches in west islip SC, the teachers call it "White Islip" not bc of the white people, bc of the cocaine problem..
and dont even get me started on St. Anthonys CATHOLIC high school..

also wanted to add...that i don't know which of the 2 is the lesser evil....for arguments sake-i'll use the 2 towns that have been discussed the most in this thread...buying a house in smithtown where heroin is highly available and all over the place and we all know that heroin can/does lead to crime/murder/death/etc...OR buying a house in mastic where most likely the drug of choice is pot and there are gangs.....IMO, i think i would pick mastic over smithtown! i think i'd have more of a shot keeping my kids out of a gang than away from heroin...
I also want to know why people say the WFSD is soo bad? is it bc of the gangs? why isn't smithtown SD classified as soo bad too since they have such a bad heroin problem...the teachers in both districts have to have masters degrees..so the education provided to both populations is to say the least similar....is it the gangs/drugs that make it soo bad in WF....if that's the case, then the Smithtown SD is soo bad too bc they have a drug problem as well...KWIM?
on a side note bc i know many people talked about resale value in mastic not being as high as a place for example, like smithtown....in a way, who cares how much money you can get for resale when you may have a kid in drug rehab or dead from heroin use
i just feel it's how you raise your kids, how you monitor their activities, how you educate them, etc........i know just as many good people from mastic as i do from smithtown and visa versa...i have family and friends that live in both areas..i have never felt "scared" walking around mastic...i shop in the stores there, etc...there are some beautiful areas, etc....and i feel just as safe walking/shopping/going out in smithtown...i would, however feel very sceaved if i ran into needles on the floor in a parking lot somewhere though!
just my 2+ cents! i wrote a lot more than i thought! luckily i type fast! i agree with the fact that there are problems everywhere...i think that each person has to decide for themselves what type of "problem" they can handle better

Its like they can't win for trying down there.
youre comparing apples to oranges, by the time the task force was brought up in regards to smithtown, it was just being discussed as to what was being done to combat the problem and how the community was addressing it in regards to the comments about it being swept under the rug. No one was discussing it in a Smithtown vs. Shirley way. No one said it wasnt commendable either in the other post that the people of Shirley were trying to clean up their town, that was just mentioned to show the people who were claiming there was no problem in S/M proof that there were in fact issues.

How very sad.
they all also have their own drug awareness programs - ie "in the know" in KP, they are both addressing the issues very publicly, is it possible they just didnt have a need for your friends drug program?

I know we are not posting that thread now, but I'm 100% SURE that there was NOT ONE person that said Shirley/mastic has "NO PROBLEMS", everyone aknowledged problems. There was some debate on the severity of them. Since I own two houses in Shirley and I've attended local meetings to learn about the issues because I don't live there AND I have a child that attended a school district on par with Smithtown that is only now addressing the problem that has been brewing for years and he's a heroin addict, I'm pretty sure I have a MUCH better perspective to compare apples to apples than most here. You and I are just not going to see eye to eye on this, and I'm fine with it. Thats what makes the world go 'round.
