Is there a law against these disgusting people??

Our nice Queens neighborhood is turning to sh*t-LITERALLY! There is dog poop all over the side walks and it is getting worse every day. There are a lot of people with dogs around here and apparently most of them don't pick up after them. I have lived here for over 15 years but it has never been this bad!

I am so outraged by it! I completely understand how disgusting it must be to have to pick up someone's sh* t every single day for years and years but these people CHOSE this life by getting a dog! It is their responsibility to cleanup after their animals. Why do other people need to constantly be afraid to step into all kind of surprises on the sidewalk? Why do we need to breath these nasty smells and be disgusted every single day because irresponsible dog owners neglect their duties? I never actually caught anyone in action but I am wondering if someone knows what can be done to control this at least somehow. How can we insure the rules get enforced? It is getting completely out of control!!

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated!

Do you have a civic association? Otherwise, unless you have a HOA or some sort of regulatory group, you can't do much.

Yes.

I am pretty sure that people have to pick up after their dogs in NYC.

On top of that, dogs have to be licensed in NYC, so I guess if you could get their license # (on the tags) you could report them

Yuck! I would say something when you see these people with their dogs, hopefully they will be embarrassed.

There are laws about cleaning up after your dog - call 311 and see what they recommend.

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

I am with you. I have a dog and I am disgusted when I see people do this. I have caught people in my neighborhood, brought them out a bag to pick it up, told them to pick it up, etc etc. I never let it go. One man was putting dog waste down the sewer and I addressed that issue also...if those of us who see it don't say something then it will never improve. But there are people out there who won't care and will laugh in your face.

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

Thank you, girls! I am pretty sure it is a lost cause, even if you caught one of them. I am just so frustrated with what this area is turning into- the amount of dogs around here is alarming, so even if half of the owners do the right thing it is still scary to think what ends up staying on the streets!!

I think I will try to call 311 and see what they say...

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

There are definitely curb laws. You really should call 311 and see what the exact rules are. They may add a foot patrol to your area at certain times.
It would also help if you kept an eye out to see what time the infractions occured, most likely at night when people are sleeping. This way, when you call 311, you can tell them that it is occuring mainly between such and such times.

For the record, we have a dog and we pick up after her wherever and whenever - with biodegradable baggies.

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

I don't have any advice about the law, but my father has watched his neighbor allow his dog to poop on my Dad's lawn and walked away. He has gone out the door and yelled at him to pick it up and the guy made a lame excuse about not having a bag. Dad said he should ALWAYS have a bag. And that if he didn't pick it up in 5 minutes, my father was going to deliver it to his house in a not-so-nice way! Chat Icon

Dad is a big guy. Sweet as can be, but when he gets mad, he really gets mad. The guy keeps doing it and my father is taking more and more action.

I have someone in my neighborhood who does it and I'm trying to "catch" them. Their dog poops on the SIDEWALK so there's a much bigger chance that someone is going to step in it. It's disgusting, to be sure.

Afraid to say though, that the kind of people who would leave the poop there may not be the kind of people who would be prompted to do the right thing because of embarrassment. Chat Icon

I did this to someone a few blocks from me, who I caught leaving dog waste, asked to pick it up and she said yes she was going to. I waited over an hour, she never came back so I put it in a bag and brought it to her home. I never see her walk past my house anymore.Chat Icon

This happened to me. I figured out where the person lived and contacted the president of his condo board. He, of course, denied it, but I had pictures to prove it. He doesn't come past our building anymore.

Can u put up signs that say "curb your dog?" We did that + it helped.

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

There is a young guy who walks his dog past my MIL's house. He lives up the block.

For whatever reason, he thinks its OK for the dog to do its business on her lawn.

She caught him several times - sometimes 2x on the same day & he would just give her a smug comment about it.

So for the next several days, she stayed inside & watched as he walked his dog back to her house & didn't clean up after it. She than collected the poop in bags & placed them all in one big brown bag.

She walked to his house, left it right at his door.

The next morning she walked up to him as he passed her house Chat Icon & asked if he got the package she left him. She informed him that she'll keep leaving BIGGER ones if he still didn't get the concept of "curb your dog".

No poop ever since.

People are stupid to say the least

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

When I lived in Queens I had this exact same problem. I finally caught the culprit in the act. It turned out to be the guy that lived next door, so I picked up all the poop and left it in his mailbox, along with a lovely letter. It stopped after that.

I have this problem as well as people throwing garbage on the small area of grass I have. I just purchased a home in a nice Queens neighborhood and every day there is a new 'surprise' on my curb. I noticed that my neighbors have cemented the surrounding areas around trees to stop it from happening to them (most of the poop is in the dirt/grass around trees but I've even had the pleasure of a finding a dump directly in front of my house)! I haven't moved in yet but I'm VERY tempted to install a camera to catch these horrible individuals. Right now I'm chalking it up to the fact that maybe people see that the house is unoccupied. My husband caught a young man already and screamed at him and the kid had a bag in his pocket! I've heard putting down peppercorns will deter animals from sniffing around (haven't tried this yet). Maybe putting a call to 311 will help. Good luck.

I have neighbors who put up signs saying "You are on camera" to deter people. I think it works, try leaving notes like that around!!!

Also...I put up a sign that said "You are being watched" when someone was dumping poop down the sewer. That stopped pronto.Chat Icon

Let me guess, forest hills? I used to step in it every time I parked my car!

I would call your councilman/woman...as well as 311. And write--send a certified letter!

Calling 311 is a waste at least it was when I lived in Queens. Crap (no pun intended) like this is one of the many reasons why I sold my house in Queens. Chat Icon

Re: Is there a law against these disgusting people??

Goobster, greenfreak, those stories are hilarious! Good for you (and the dad) for standing up and fighting those a-holes!

KittyGags, how funny- it IS Forest Hills!!! What IS it about this place! This is suppose to be a NICE neighborhood!Chat Icon

Totally agree about 311 in Queens or Brooklyn-useless! If there is a murder in Corona or Elmhurst, the police will most likely go there and not care that some dog pooped in the wrong spot!

Another problem is that I am not even in a house, I live in an apartment building and there are other apartment buildings all around me-so really, it is very hard to catch someone in action, and the walkway doesn't really belong to anyone, so nobody cares...Chat Icon

I did see TWO people with their dogs today and they both were carrying bags already with poop. I was ready to hug them and thank them for being so responsible in the mist of all the crap! But I didn't -one must control oneself!Chat Icon

I think I will try to call the councilwoman tomorrow. Although i am not holding my breath for that to work eitherChat Icon

You can do that but also POLICE YOURselves...esp since you brought up some good points about not being able to catch people since it's apt buildings.

So put up signs if you have to. You may appear a bit nuts to some people but those people apparently don't care about the poop (when they should).
