Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

My son is going to be 7 weeks tomorrow. he will be going to tutor time day care at 12 weeks. Currently I rock him or walk around with him to fall asleep for naps and bedtime. how do I stop this before daycare??? I doubt they have the time to walk around with him to help him sleep. Im afraid now he wont sleep at all at daycare!!

If I put him down without being asleep he will hang out but never fall asleep. And if he isn't in a deep sleep when I put him down he will wake up!! Uggg...If he wasn't going to daycare I wouldn't care!!! Too early to CIO. Help!!Chat Icon

ETA: they say you can't spoik a newborn.. to me... he is now spoiled isn't he?? Chat Icon

Im not sure, but when you find out let me know. DS is 6 months and this is the only way he will go to sleep. Chat Icon

Will your DC fall asleep in a swing? That's how we do daytime naps. If he seems tired I give him a binky, and put him in the swing, usually after a bottle.

ETA: DS is in daycare and I've seen them rock the babies in the crib, bouncy or swing. My DS prefers the swing for his naps these days, I'm ok with that.

Unfortunately he wont fall asleep anywhere except for a human. i can then transfer gently and he'll stay asleep..sometimes

Re: Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

We have a baby we need to rock. He's 5 1/2 months now and we're just starting to CIO. He always needed to be rocked and since he was too young to let cry, I don't really see how we could've done it any other way. I would let daycare deal with it - I'm sure they've seen it all before and they have tricks to get them to sleep.

Re: Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

My DD needed to be rocked to sleep for a long time. I would walk around with her during the day and at night rock in the glider. Once she was asleep I would transfer her- but she had to be passed out- otherwise she'd wake up.

Now. I just put her down when she's ready for nap/bedtime and she will fall asleep on her own. She is just about 5 months old.

Everyone told me how much I was spoiling her by holding her/rocking her- but I let her lead me in the beginning. Now she's a very easy baby.

Re: Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

Linda - can I be totally honest here. With my first son I had to rock him for every single nap (I would rock him for two hours only to get him to take a 30 minute nap) and I would also nap him for bed every night. He was my first, and I thought this was what he needed to fall asleep.

Now, after having my second son, I realize that I kind of did it to myself. I don't think that he necessarily needed me to rock him - but that I didn't give him a chance to go to sleep on his own. I would pick him up at the very first cry (or even whimper)

With my second I truly don't have the time to rock him so he from day one has been so easy. Here are some tricks that work for us. When he is in his crib and fussy I take my hand and firmly place it on his chest (not hurting him - but so that he feels me) and I take my other hand and stroke his forehead right over his eyebrows. This almost always works.

If I do have to rock him it's never for more then five minutes ever - once he is in that drowsy ALMOST asleep mode I put him in his crib and kind of hug him for a little bit as I am taking my arms out (again so he still feels me but I'm not holding him anymore) I then gently pull my arm out from under him and he's usually asleep within minutes.

I don't know if it's that Tyler is an easier baby - but I truly think that if I did these things with Jack they probably would have worked.

Sorry so long - I just know how hard it is when you spend hours upon hours rocking your baby! Chat Icon

At that age, I would still rock my baby. They need the love and comfort still. Chat Icon

Re: Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

DS is almost 12 weeks. He loves to be held, rocked, sleep on our chests. I go backto work in a few weeks and DS will be in daycare 3 of those days. So i've been starting to nap him w/o rocking. I can tell when he's cranky and wants a nap so i'll walk with him for like a minute, then put him down on his belly. He fusses for a few minutes, then starts sucking on his hand until he falls asleep.

like you, i was concerned with daycare taking the time to rock or hold him. He seems to be going down more and more w/o being held for ever.

however,im sure in daycare they will need to do what they have to to get them to nap..LOL.

I JUST did this the other morning at 3am when he woke and it worked like a charm, he went back out until 5. I guess he needed that comfort for a few since he wasn't hungry. I was shocked & thrilled all in one!

I do this at nap time. While he only naps for me for 45 minutes to an hour he can at least put himself to sleep without crying. If I miss his cues of sleepiness, he has to be rocked for naps but I find what's posted above works really well.

I have to admit though later in the evening, I love our cuddle time and I allow him to nap on me for as long as he wants. Am I spoiling him, probably but I love it

ETA: at bedtime he does get fed while being rocked in our rocker, I don't think that's really a bad habit, I think that's just our bedtime routine KWIM?

I don't believe you can spoil a newborn. What I have found helpful though, because I too will be going back to work in 4 weeks, is I have put him in his crib to nap during the day. If he cries, he cries (as long as all other needs are met: diaper, fed, etc). My ped recommended I do this and take the time to shower or eat, but what it has done is made him ok to be without mommy for a bit. Eventually (within a couple of days) he started napping during those times without assistance. You can eventually start doing that at night too. The ped said it's good for both baby and mommy to have some time alone.

I actually should say that I do rock Tyler in the glider at night when I can. It's very rare that Jack is in his crib and I get to spend this time with him. It's sooooo nice to snuggle and rock him for a little bit. I almost wish I could do it a little bit more.

Re: Rocking your new born to sleep. Spoiled or not???

Thanks so much Ladies. Im going to try everything you've said.. the hand on the chest and forehead rub. Def going to start napping him in his crib instead of the swing. Right now he sleeps in his bassinet not the crib yet so hopfully he will get used to the crib b/c of the naps.
Thanks ladies!! Im dreading daycare!!!Chat Icon
