Still undecided between South Nassau and Winthrop for delivery...Im almost 31 weeks

I'd like to hear about anyone's experience at either of these hospitals. Im hearing the rooms at Winthrop arent that great but the L&D rooms are.
Haven't heard much about South Nassau yet, but those are the 2 hospitals my dr is affiliated with. I originally said Id go to Winthrop but am not sure Im making the right decision...any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I delivered in July at Winthrop and I had a great experience. I agree that the post partum rooms could use a little updating but the L&D rooms are very nice. The staff was terrific and I loved the L&D nurses!

I had a wonderful experience at Winthrop and I was very pleased with L&D. I like that it is all enclosed, updated, and secured and they have a fabulous NICU (which I hope we never need). The nurses were amazing. I had a friend deliver at S. Nassau and she loved the maternity rooms b/c they were all private (if I remember correctly). Does it make a difference where your Ped. is affiliated? Have you gone on a tour of each? That should help make the decision.

I just had my DD 2 weeks ago and delivered at south nassau. I cannot begin to tell you how great my experience was at south nassau. Between the wonderful nurses and aides and the amazing private rooms...I didn't want to go home! The food was delicious too.

Every nurse I had in the labor and delivery and in materinity...I fell in love with. They were so helpful and kind....especially at night when I was having difficulty breastfeeding...they came in to help me and tell me I was doing a good job. One night I was so upset because I had to supplement with formula...and my hormones were out of wack...so I was hysterical crying...the nurse came to get me from my room...brought me to the nursury and handed DD over to me to cheer me up. I was so happy she did that and it totally helped!

I don't know anything about winthrop...but South Nassau was amazing!

Not pregnant now but I have had babies at both Winthrop and South Nassau...I think everyone's experience may be different based on the circumstances going on at the time.

I was not happy with my experience at Winthrop at all. They were busting at the seams with L&D and the nursery at maximum capacity when I had DS1 and I got very little attention and nothing was done for me in a timely manner. Some of these delays may or may not have led to me ultimately having a c-section (I was "on the clock" after my water broke), I'll never know but if things were done when they should have been, it's possible I could have gone naturally. I am not a demanding person at all but they were so very busy they simply couldn't attend to me the way they should have.

There was also only one lactation consultant on who was running from room to room and I felt I didn't get a lot of breastfeeding support, again, because they were too busy. However I have several friends who have been THRILLED with having their babies at Winthrop so I really think my experience had a lot to do with their census when I delivered.

South Nassau was a dream for DS2 and DD. I got great care, lots of support, they had time for everything I needed. Granted I had repeat c-sections which don't leave as much up to chance as laboring did, but all in all I felt so much better about my experiences at South Nassau.

Hope that helps!

Re: Still undecided between South Nassau and Winthrop for delivery...Im almost 31 weeks

I always knew I would deliver at Winthrop- the whole hospital is incredible with such great staff. My siblings and I were all born there, my dad was cared for there before he passed away, and I worked there for a year. It's a great hospital and highly rated. A friend of mine has the choice between Winthrop and South Nassau also and she asked her OB where he prefers to deliver. His response was, "If all goes well, and you and the baby are healthy, South Nassau is a great hospital. But, God forbid something goes wrong, you want to be at Winthrop." For her, it wasn't a choice after that, she just figured why even take a chance then, so she's delivering at Winthrop also.
That being said, I was at South Nassau recently when another friend had her baby there and the whole nursery area was recently redone and the rooms are very nice, if that's partly what you are considering in your decision as well.

The lactation cnurses at South Nassau are really good too! They came in to check on me a couple times a day...everyday i was there. My last day at South Nassau i still felt like i had a bunch of BFing questions and issues...the nurse told me that they wouldn't discharge me until i had all my questions answered! That really helped because the LC came in two or three times before i was discharged.

I delivered both my babies at South Nassau and had a wonderful experience both times. DS ended up in the NICU (both of us had a fever during delivery) and received excellent care. DD was able to go straight to the regular nursery and had no problems. What I loved most was the attention I received from the nurses and doctors. Whenever I needed help, someone was there for me. The nurses were sooo supportive and friendly. The LCs were all wonderful too! I went back to South Nassau a couple months after DD was born to get some extra tubing for my pump and the LC remembered me right away. The renovated L&D and all-private postpartum rooms and free wi-fi are a bonus, but not my main reason for delivering there. I also took several trips to L&D during both pregnancies for preterm labor and spotting issues and was well-cared for each time.

Good luck making your decision!
