Since when won't a bank cash a payroll check that was drafted from them?!

trying to strategically cash today's paycheck so that i can go buy DH's christmas gifts.

MY bank won't cash it without showing it as a deposit and withdrawal (sooo stupid, i know). Of course, DH gets transaction notifications on his phone.

So then I took it to the bank that drafted it. In fact, it's the bank where my boss does all his banking and the office banking and they know him well. The teller actually looked at the check and said, "Oohhh, you work for X! He's such a nice man...". Sorry, we can't cash the check unless you have an account. Funny thing is that I DO, or rather DID, have an account with them that THEY CANCELLED for inactivity. Apparently the $4 i had floating in there was considered abandoned. They won't reopen my old account, but I could open a NEW account and wait 5 days for the payroll check to clear. She suggested a check cashing place.

RIDICULOUS.

How frustrating! Chat Icon

Can you double endorse the check and have your boss cash it for you??

thats so dumb- the bank that our checks are drawn on always cashes it for us- we just have to show our work id- can you talk to someone higher up than the teller?

I think banks stopped cashing payroll checks a while ago. It makes no sense since the money can come out of the business account right away - the banks dont float checks anymore so there's really no risk.

I think WalMart cashes payroll checks fro $3. Not sure if that's an option. I've never done it but I've seen the sign.

Ugh. I know when I worked in the city, my firm didn't offer direct deposit, so they contacted the branch manager and they were able to put down my name and co worker's name and they could cash our payroll checks. That was Citibank

I worked at another firm where they gave us a card to use at Chase to have them cash our payroll checks. Same thing, small firm, no direct deposit.

I am pretty sure this has been standard for at lease five yearsChat Icon

That is annoying. I always thought that if you took a check to the bank that the check "came from" they would cash it without you needing an account. This is because they can check the account for funds before cashing it.

This was how it was when I was a bank teller.

Sorry that happened.

Can you talk to someone in payroll at your firm? The bank that writes the check should have an agreement that they will cash those checks with a valid employee ID. I had to do that once a few years ago before I had direct deposit...

I've done this with personal checks, too. When I was a horse trainer / riding instructor, I had a client that gave me a bad check. Next time they did not pay me in cash, I went directly to their bank to cash the check. With a valid picture ID, I had no problems.

That is so frustrating.

Most banks won't cash a check if you don't have an account with them. Even if the check was drawn on that bank. Too much fraud out there, and the bank doesn't have your info, signature on file, etc. if you don't have an account with them. At my job it's been this way for at least 8 years.

I know that you said they closed the account on you, but by law, they have to turn the $ over to abandoned property after a certain amount of time being dormant. It stinks, but there's nothing they can do about it.

Can you take it to a check cashing place?

whatever you do, don't go to a check cashing place. they'll skim off so much of it, it will not be worth it. can you try another branch of this bank, perhaps?

Out of curiosity...if you never deposited your check for this week...wouldn't DH wonder why you didn't get paid in the first place? So, what's the harm in depositing and withdrawing the money if you would normally deposit it anyway? Just tell DH you took the money for holiday shopping...you don't have to get specific with him for how much, who, what...or is there something I am missing here?

What bank was this? I dont understand why they could not have cashed it!! They were probably behind on their sales and were pushing people to open accounts...

I used to work at a bank and I was a teller and then moved up to operational dept and I know we cashed checks like that all the time. Maybe rules have changed since I left, who knows. So glad I dont do banking anymore!
