Do you perform a monthly breast exam?
Theoretically we're all supposed to be performing monthly breast exams. It's supposed to be a great way to detect problems early, and with everything we do for other people, we should really take out a few minutes a month for our own health.

its a little tough, because i have a lot of scar tissue from the surgery.....but yes, when I remember.

I would but I would freak myself out because Im nursing and my ducts are engorged with milk and I would freak out. I leave it to my doc to feel for herself...

I don't either, but it's really not worth it to NOT do it. I'm going to start. I think we all should.

I'm very cystic, so I can never tell if what I feel is normal. I used to get so freaked out because I would always feel something. They told me I'm better off not checking.

I can understand that. Do you have special US or mammography procedures b/c of having cystic breasts?

No, apparently the doctors can tell the difference between cystic tissue and tumors or growths, but to me it all feels lumpy, especially where the breast meets my torso.

Thanks. I'm asking b/c my mom and sis both have cystic breasts, and I am always trying to get on them to make sure they get the care they need.

No  I know I should but I don't. But I do go to the gyno 2x/year, not once, so I'm getting thoroughly checked out more often than a lot of women.

I check often - definitely more than once a month - but that's b/c I do have lumps in both my breasts and I need to monitor them (make sure the shape and size hasn't changed).
I think it's great that women get checked at their yearly's - or bi-yearly's - but it honestly isn't enough. It is such an easy exam - your Dr should show you how and when to do it.

According to Komen.org, the best time is at the end of your period, breasts are the least tender at this time

I try to remember, and usually do it in the shower, when I am soaped up 
Going for my first mammogram on Saturday, I am a little nervous, but decided it was time.

Yes monthly. I have a very huge fear of getting any type of cancer. In college I met a girl who was only 21 with breast cancer!!!!

I usually do it once a month, just out of paranoia because my grandmother died of breast cancer. I also go to the gyn every six months, so the doc checks. When I hit the big 30, which is just round the corner, I will have to go for mammograms every year and have the results checked by a surgeon because of the family history.
