How horrible. I will keep them in my prayers.

I will be honest.. I love my husband dearly.. but I would die trying to save my child. And my husband would have it no other way.

Re: Man had to choose to save wife or child

I read this yesterday, so sad. The article I read didn't say she was chasing after some kids. Just goes to show you, sometimes, you should just let things go.

That's a really sad story, but I'm sorry, she has forgiven the kids??? I don't think I'd be blaming the kids, but myself for getting in the car with my kid and chasing after them. Not saying it's entirely her fault or she should blame herself, but I know I would if it were me.

This part doesnt sit right with me either. In the end it sounds like temporary insanity on her part. They broke her mailbox, they didnt run over her child. Why the chase??? The mailbox couldnt have been worth all of this.

ITA. And as much as I love my husband, there is no way I'd save him before one of my kids. I'd drown trying to save one of them.

I agree. And I don't have kids yet, but I honestly can't imagine saving my husband over my drowning child. Nor would LET him save me knowing my child was still in that car!!

Just a sad story....Chat Icon

Very good points!! And while I don't have children, I can't imagine NOT saving them if I were in this position. I know my FH would lay down his life for ANYONE.

Now, what I am going to say I truly am not meaning to come across as rude/uncaring or anything of that sort because I would never wish harm/sadness to ANYONE...BUT...had the husband not saved his wife, he may or may not have have found love again after grieving etc...but the child could NEVER be replaced...not saying the wife CAN, but it's different, KWIM? It's heartbreaking to ever even BE in that situation and I couldn't even imagine what they must be feeling like. Again, I didn't mean to offend, maybe it makes more sense in my headChat Icon

Absolutely!
Why didnt the dad continue to go down for the son after the wife was above water? The car already hit bottom? Even if it was descending how the heck was he getting the son out? The whole scene is terrible!
The focus of the story is odd though. Why are they focused on who saved who...they should be focused on what anger/retaliation can cause. Mom was no hero in this story and wasnt dad not too far behind all of this???

Was it necessary to put the kid(s) in the car to give chase too? Tragic that a kid died due to his dad's putting him in danger in the first place.

I completely agree. I wonder (not being judgmental here, just curious), if the roles were reversed, would the wife have made the same decision?

I doubt it. And I agree with the above posters, as well. I would die saving my baby.

I think the father was thinking logically rather than emotionally. He was probably thinking better to lose one than three.

What I don't get is why he calmly sat on the shore after ragging his wife to safety instead of going back to try to save his son.

I hope.....no pray this never happens to my family but if so I would be yelling to DH to save our daughter! I couldn't bear to live without her anyway.

I don't even have kids but know I would instinctively save my child (or die trying) over anyone else, any day!

It's like when you read about a fire where the parents are outside while the kids die in the fire...no way, no how!! They'd be tossed out a window before I'd let that happen!

There is not a chance I'd want my husband to save me over my child. We are both on the same page about that.

Such a tragedy. If I was that mom the only thing that would keep me going was if there were surviving siblings.

Re: Man had to choose to save wife or child

I have to say that I would have made the same choice he made. They have other children to consider also and if he felt that he son was not reachable then I think he made the right choice. If both were able to be saved then I would save my kids, no question. But in the circumstance it looks like he was in I think I would have made the same choice. As hard as it would be I also couldn't imagine leaving my other kids with no parents and a loss of sibling.

Re: Man had to choose to save wife or child

I think my instinct would be to save my child first HOWEVER, had he gone after his child, his OTHER children could have been left with no parents at all. Perhaps that is what he was thinking. I don't know, I just don't think it is fair for any one of them.

Re: Man had to choose to save wife or child

I don't know if it's fair to judge this guy or the mom. I'm sure the dad made the best decision he could in a split second. Maybe the mom was more reachable and he thought he could save both at first, but then realized he couldn't? And I wouldn't do it, but I'm sure the mom had NO idea that chasing those kids would end up with her son dying! I just feel bad for the family. It really does sound like a freak accident.
