Anyone thinking of using a midwife.....

a great documentary to watch is The Business of Being Born. There's been a lot of posts on here about midwives & questions of unnecessary medical interventions lately, so I wanted to pass this on to everyone. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone thinking of using a midwife.....

I did see this for the first time two nights ago. I still have it on my DVR to watch again with DH since he only caught the last 1/2 hour of it.

My heart was set on a midwife after my last birth but this documentary (and my experience last night at the OB's office) was like mortar for my rock wall.

I highly recommend it to anyone giving birth. Even if you are having an OB assisted birth in a hospital, at least you'll know more about the interventions involved.

Just wanted to add that I am also having a regular birth in a hospital, only with a midwife instead of an OB. I think there is more risk involved in a home birth and the OB my midwife works for will be on call in case of any complications (and other doctors will be available at the hospital if there's any type of emergency).

Re: Anyone thinking of using a midwife.....

I've had two wonderful hospital births with midwives, both could have been very high intervention situations with a traditional OB (first baby was very high and took hours of pushing, second was an early water-break and I was GBS+). I had both with no drugs and no interference.

Oh, and I love, love, love this documentary. I think all preggos should check it out.

Re: Anyone thinking of using a midwife.....

My practice has 5 OB's and 2 CNM's. However in VA the law is that a midwife can't deliver in a hospital without a coach. Meaning an OB. Chat Icon I have to look into it more.
