Day Trip on LIRR/ stations right in towns

Hi,

I promised my DD (2 year old) a ride on the LIRR. (We're in the Huntington area.) Aside from Greenlawn, are there any other towns we can get off & walk around in/explore that are right near the RR station? I don't mind going off the Pt. Jeff line, just don't particularly want to go as far as Manhattan.

Thanks for your help!

I'm drawing a blank but I can suggest next summer the Long Island Live Steamers. They have mini ride on steam trains run by engineers. Really fun and cute for kids and adults. I posted about it so you can do a search if you want.

We did this. We took my then three year old son from Huntington to Mineola (about a 1/2 hour trip) as he had been asking for a ride on the train. From there, we walked to a local pizza place for lunch. There isn't a lot to see in Mineola, but the station is right in town and the length of the train ride was just right to satisfy my son.

Babylon! Take the train to Babylon! You can walk around. There are many shops and even a toy store! You can also take him to a park that is literally a 5 minute walk from the station!

Oh, I love the Steamers! We went to the last run day this October and got to ride on the Thomas train! what an incredible set-up - and everyone who works there is a volunteer!

Thanks everyone for your ideas!

Go to Forest Hills in Queens! The RR station is in the middle of the main shopping and eating area (Austin Street). Tons of restaurants, etc.

If you want to come out on the Montauk Line, the Hampton Bays stop is right in town.

DS loves trains/transportation - never thought of taking the train just to take the train.

The Great Neck station is right in the middle of town and you can walk anywhere. There are several parks with playgrounds, pizza places, a library, movie theatre, all a short walk from the train.

The Kings Park Station is right near the main street; you could hop on at Greenlawn or Huntington and take it out east a bit and then come back.

I'm confused. If the op lives in Hungtington how can they get to Babylon or Sayville? If I'm not mistaken, it would mean them getting the train to Mineola, Hicksville or Jamaica and switching lines, which might be a bit much with a 2 year old.

How about going East of Huntington? The train to Port Jeff would take about 40 mins and that's a great town to walk around.

Great Neck is on the Pt. Washington branch which does not go through Jamaica. They would have to ride into Penn Station and back out to get there and back.

I share your confusion. I think the OP meant she was willign to drive to another line, but if she drove to the Babylon line, wouldn't she just get on at Babylon? Chat Icon
I'm not too familiar with suffolk ( and don't live on LI anymore) but it seemd that would be the closest station on that line for her.
I was going to suggest Port Jeff, but I couldn't remember if the places to walk around are near the train.
