did anyone have a house warming party?
my DH wants to have one once everything is done in the house. I asked him what he wanted me to do and he said to get invitations, put together a list of people and a menu, etc. i thought it was just a party to show the house. to me with how formal he wants it, it sounds like he wants gifts haha. have any of you had one? i dont want it to sound like we want gifts but i'll gladly take a bottle of wine or whatever if they wanna give it. thanks

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
we didnt- but only because we bought our place within 2 weeks of our wedding and we didnt want gifts
maybe send an evite/phone call invites- if you make it less formal, people will bring wine, etc.

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
We didn't - but friends of ours did. They sent out evites.
I think if you word it as "housewarming" - that equals gifts.
If you word it as anything that says anything even remotely close to "come see our new house" - that equals gifts.

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
I did a year ago. We sent out evites. We got alot of calls and emails asking us what we needed for our home. Quite a few family members asked us just to register for what we needed b/c they didn't want to buy us something we didn't need. I felt funny about this but ended registering at Bed Bath and Beyond. On the evite I worded it something like " for those of you who have requested, we have registered at BBB but please remember the only gift we are requesting is your presence"
Almost everyone bought something off our registry and we really just kept it to things we needed, nothing lavish.

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
IMO, housewarming party = give me a gift = tacky. I think that housewarming parties are tacky especially when "thrown" for yourself. If you want your family and friends to see your new home, invite them for dinner, not to a party that begs for a gift.

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
We had sort of a house-warming party. We had invitations made and sent out, but it was in July and we worded it as a BBQ to come celebrate and see our new home. We did not do it for gifts. We wanted our closest friends and family to see our new home. We provided BBQ food as well as 4 hot dishes/buffet. We cooked everything. Some gave gifts, some didn't, some a bottle of wine....whether it was something or nothing, we were just happy to show off our new home and have the most important people in our lives there to celebrate!

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
we had an informal engagement party for friends of ours at our new house right after we moved in, so we got a couple of gifts from people that were attending. it was not labeled a house warming though.

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
we really want to have a party to celebrate buying our home (when we finally get it) but I plan on not calling it a housewarming party, and I will write in small print on the bottom, no gifts please

Re: did anyone have a house warming party?
We just had a big cookout, didn't call it a house warming and didn't expect gifts as it was right after our wedding.

I agree. Once our house is all put together, I'd love to host a "Let's christen this bltch" dinner party just to break the place in, but I'd carefully word it so people don't feel like a gift is part of the equation.

I disagree We put a lot of work into our house and wanted to have people over to help us celebrate the new place. We threw the party about 6 months after moving in and we sent out an evite, calling it a housewarming party. We catered the food, provided all alcohol and put a lot of work into making it a fun evening for everyone. We had about 50 people show up throughout the night.
We certainly did not expect gifts from anyone and that was not the purpose of the event. The real purpose was to have all our friends and family over to see the new house (since everyone wanted to come see it) and to share in the excitement with us. We were very proud of what we'd done. I'd say about 3/4 of the people that came brought a gift with them - most were bottles, some were cute house type gifts (frame, chip bowl etc), nothing was too expensive. Some of our friends had also previously chipped in and gotten us a Wii for a housewarming gift (all on their own, long before the party).
I certainly don't think it's tacky to have a housewarming party and to suggest that we threw one to get gifts is pretty insulting.
eta: IMO the whole 'gift giving' thing has gotten way out of hand in our society if people feel that inviting people over to celebrate an event automatically means you're asking for gifts. Last Sat night i had friends over to our house to help celebrate my birthday with me. For various reasons, i didn't want to go out to bars and spend $, so i thought we'd have people over and play rock band since thats what i enjoy doing lately. My friends came over and we had a good time. A few people brought some alcohol, but not everyone and i most definitely did not invite people for that purpose.. i just wanted to be with my friends for my birthday.
