Re: Ridge...anyone?
We bought our house in Ridge 5 years ago, we love it here. Its very rustic, people are very friendly and family oriented. There is a tremendous amount of wildlife and access to amazing State land. I live in the Lake Panamoka neighborhood, its 7 minutes to the Riverhead Tanger outlets from my front door. Plenty of shopping in Riverhead. We have a great public library, great fire dept and our school budget always passes. Access to the expressway and Sunrise hwy is easy because of William Floyd. If you have questions about a specific area, feel free to ask! There are at least 3 other LIFers that I know of that live in Ridge.

I'm in Middle Island which is only the next town over. There are parts of Ridge that are beautiful. Beautiful homes, very rustic area with lots of woodlands, and shopping galore with the outlets and new stores down the road from the outlets. As with any town, there are some "questionable" areas but I haven't let that bother me. DH and I live on the North side of Middle Country Road. The South side of Middle Country Road is Gordon Heights which is not a great area. I think that as long as you chose your neighborhood well, you'll be fine. The school district is good and there is easy access to highways. If you like the area, go for it!

We've greived our taxes twice in 5 years and won both times, so there's chance you can get the taxes even lower! Aside from all of the county and town land preserved in Ridge, Brookhaven State Park is 2500 acres of beautiful, clean trails.

Re: Ridge...anyone?
DH grew up in Coram which is in the same school district I believe(Longwood) and in our opinion, it is not the best school district. Certainly not the worst, but we did not buy in that area based on the school and its proximity to Gordan Heights.
Check out the New York Sex offender registry for Coram Most of these are in Homestead Village in Gordon Heights. There is a very high consentration of sex offenders and it is pretty close to Ridge(same School District)

True, Gordon Heights does have a higher population of REGISTERED sex offenders...as a parent I'm more worried about the ones that aren't registered and aren't being monitored.
As for Longwood being a district where everything is close together, not really. Its 53 square miles which I believe makes it the second largest district by square miles in suffolk. Here's a link to the district website. Longwood

I respect your opinion, but Sex offenders have the highest rate of repeat offenses of almost all criminals. So I worry ALOT about the registered ones, as the mom of 2 girls. Everyone makes their own choices, I just believe knowledge is power and I was just sharing some facts. I would hate to move into an area that had 72 sex offenders in ONE of the towns within the 53 square miles of my school district and not know about it beforehand. I would hope that someone would mention it to me, so I could make my desicion either way.

My good friend grew up here. She loved it and it is a lovely area, very woodsy as PP said and "country" like.
My friend attended catholic school as she says the public schools weren'y so great (this was then...I do not know if they are better now) HTH

OP, Ridge is very nice, rustic, woodsy. I'd buy there.

I don't understand how the school district lines define where a predator will seek prey. The Shoreham-Wading River School District line is less than 1/8 of a mile from my house, would one of those predators from Gordon Heights know to stop their search for innocent children mid block because the district line changed? They are everywhere, they are an unwanted, transient population that are finding it harder and harder to find housing that meets the geographic boundary requirements. This problem is not going away anytime soon and there is no data (that I'm aware of) to support your claim that living in the same district creates a higher threat. Every parent/family has their own level of comfort and I respect your opinion as well. FTR, the OP never asked about the schools or mentioned having school age children.

The original poster asked for general information on an area. And having a school aged kid, I know that when your kids makes friends at school, and they go visit other homes within your school district. So if your kid made a friend at school they could very well live MUCH closer to the dense population of sex offenders. And I apologize for making the assumption, they may have kids. I did not realize that could be offensive. This is an open forum for sharing information, and that is just what I did. I shared facts that SOME people COULD find relavant. Sorry you did not.

Not trying to stir the pot further, but it could be assumed that the OP has a child based on their SN, Rileysmama....
And even though I am childless, I still wouldn't want to move into an area where there is a high concentration of sex offenders close by...as a matter of fact, there was one in my old apartment building and I tried to have him evicted.

Understood and I agree that adults may not want to live around sex offenders either. Using the example of a SO living in your apartment building as a comparison for the OP about Gordon Heights and Ridge being close is not very accurate. Using Mapquest my house in RIDGE is 9.6 miles from Gordon Heights, it takes an average of 15 minutes to get there, IMO that's not very "close" by LI standards. The house I grew up in and lived in for 24 years in Port Jefferson Station is 6.4 miles from Gordon Heights, my friends house in Miller place is 8.9 miles away. So just out of curiosity, and I'm genuinely trying to learn something from people with a different point of view-how do you determine what is "close" or safe? is there a mileage guideline? or is it based on school district lines? We own two rental houses in a different area that also has an unusually high SO population, however I consider the people that live in and around our rental properties are nice, hardworking family oriented people. I'm sure they would never want anything bad to happen to their family. Everyone has to live somewhere on this planet, what's good for me may not be good for you.

Re: Ridge...anyone?
i do have a young child, so it is an issue, but i realize some areas are closer to the "bad" areas and others aren't..such is life on LI !
i'm pretty open minded, as i know sex offenders with a record (or no record yet), can and do exist anywhere, i just am not too keen in living in a "red-dot cluster zoned" neighborhood. lol
it's scary because no matter what neighborhood you live in, one can always crop up and move in next door.
all these things to worry about!
i always find it a shame mastic/shirley/etc get a bad rep, when there are such nice areas and people in some parts, and a few bad apples spoil the bunch...i've seen brand-new model houses that would go for 500,000 in other areas on the market in the 200k range in mastic. i'd consider moving there, because i think there is a lot of good, and i feel a child will succeed in any school if they have the drive, but my only drawback would be the re-sale value if it were to get a worse rep (i hope it doesn't!)
LI , in my opinion, is amazing place to live but it's weird how one town is deemed good and the next one is bad, or like the desirable areas have many issues too , but they are swept under the rug.
i grew up in a desirable town with a "great school district" where the budget always passed, and so on...but there was no diversity (which i do like - i like being around an assortment of people) and while everyone was rich, the kids were doing drugs, and not just smoking pot here or there, but shooting heroin. so it was a beautiful town, but needles existed in the parking lots. and the taxes generally are 11 a year. scary thought.
thanks for the inputs , guys!
maybe we should all just start our own town it'll be nice, and have no drugs or offenders.. (and it must have a Target!)

I just want to say that I live in Ridge and couldn't be happier with the area we live. We live in a new development which is surrounded by the pine barrens, so it will not be built up. We have awesome neighbors and i don't think the school district is that bad. I grew up in coram and went to longwood, so I know the real deal with the schools. Unfortunately most people hear bad things about Longwood and they have never even stepped foot on the school grounds. I can tell you that a decent amount of my neighbors also grew up in this area and have decided to stay and raise their own families here. That says a lot in my opinion. I am 15 minutes away from gordon heights and about 2 minutes away from shoreham. The buses here run NO WHERE near gordon heights (if thats a concern). And every area has there bad parts! My husband grew up in the great neck/manhasset area and i've heard some stories from those areas that would make people second guess living there!

I think thats a myth because I saw an article not too long about about a sex offender living across the street from a school, and there was nothing they could about it.

I agree. Middle Island is very close to Ridge. We had looked at houses in Ridge as well.
No matter what school district you are in, there are questionable areas. I'd have absolutely NO problems sending my kids to Longwood.

In my work as a social worker, I've worked with some adults that have been convicted of sexual offenses and are registered. In the work I've done, the monitoring is not great. They don't REALLY have a curfew because there are too many offenders and not enough probation/parole officers to monitor (and that's only if they are on probation/parole).
In addition, I currently work with juvenile sexual offenders who have been convicted as juveniles (ages 11-17). These young men offend for very different reasons than adults. Their records are also sealed and one can only hope that they won't offend as adults. So, while there are adult offenders out there...there are also kids doing it to kids as well.
With that being said, I think the best response to this post is to say that we should monitor our children as best as we can. And, while we can't watch their every move and be with them every minute of the day, we CAN be mindful of the people they spend time with and the places they go. Obviously, we aren't going to chose to live next door to an offender, but there are offenders in every neighborhood. Some registered, some not. Just be careful of the ones you trust and keep close to your children.

this is true. they can be anywhere. scary stuff! a kid i grew up with who was THE quintessential boy-next-door , great family, loved by teachers, etc...turned out to show up at a sting operation after they were talking to underage kids onine.
