Questions about Prometrium

Hi Ladies,

I went to my Ob-gyn after being on CD 64 with no AF in sight. (If anyone read my previous post, I have been regular my whole life, so this was very unusual for me.) The good news is that he did a sonogram and said that my uterine lining looked good and there were no cysts. He then said, I am going to write you a prescription to bring on your period. He wrote a prescription for Prometrium and wants me to take it for 10 days. Then my period should come, then I go back on it again from CD 19 - CD 28. He wrote me a prescription for 6 months.

I then asked him if he knew why I wasn't getting my period and he said sometimes it just happens, etc. I also said, could it be something like PCOS and he said it doesn't matter, even if it is, I would still prescribe this to you. So, I sort of felt like he dismissed me and maybe I should have been more persistent.

In any case, I started taking it last night and feel like it is the right thing to do to bring on my period. However, I don't know that I want to stay on it for 6 months. Here are my questions:

- Should I have demanded a blood test to rule out things like low-thyroid, etc?
- If Prometrium is bringing on a period (with or without ovulation) could I be masking a bigger problem I have (perhaps not ovulating)? I am thinking of maybe doing it for one month and then starting OPK to ensure I am ovulating.
- Am I overreacting and this whole thing is over-kill because I just missed one period?

Any advice you have is appreciated!

When I was TTC with my DD I took Prometrium twice. Then I decided I didn't like the synthetic hormones in my system and decided to go to acupuncture to naturally bring on AF. I ended up pregnant that next month.

I have a friend that took Prometrium last month and her OB told her she can't take it again for 90 days but she doesn't know why. I asked her to find out b/c I'm curious of the risks her OB thinks it has. Just in case I need it again I want to know.

My doctor just gave me a prescription for Prometrium to take right after ovulation in the hopes to lengthen my Luteal Phase to help with getting PG. I get so confused when I hear about people taking it to get AF.

I was also confused. The way I understand it, one of the reasons (amongst others) that we get a period every month is because our progesterone levels drop which signals our body to get a period. Mine are apparently out of whack. By taking progesterone for 10 days, my levels will go up while on it and then drop significantly (after going off of it), which will cause my body to get a period.

The part that scares me, is that all the above will happen with or without ovulation.
