Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
Our typical LIPA bill is $345, I can't remember if thats monthly or for 3 mos? LOL
And our TV Phone and Internet is all bundled together, thats another 295 including my cell phone which is $107...
Water is another $90 something...again, I don't know if thats monthly because I feel like I've only seen mail from them once?
And the gas I'm not sure about, we just filled up the tank and it was $400 but this is our first winter in the house so monthly not sure?
From our monthlys you're missing our pool guy which costs a small fortune, obviously only over the summer...and then landscapers--who we started to use while we were on our honeymoon so our neighbors didn't hate us and he just keeps coming ever since... And its not like we've tried to make him stop..
And groceries which of course will vary..but I feel like we spend a ridiculous amount of money on groceries, TP, paper towels, etc...

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
Oil is about $1800 a year Electric is about $1600 a year Water is about $150 a year Internet/phone/cable $1800 a year
It adds up for sure.
Add in food/car/gas/credit cards-student loans/landscaping/gifts/clothes/personal items
There are a gazillion things that happen so budget in misc household expenses as well. Those miscellaneous things happen more than you know.

Keep a rainy day fund for repairs that may pop up unexpectedly, like needing to replace appliances, maintenance on a cesspool, a leaking roof, etc.
There are other expenses that are not regular, but should be considered too, ie: tools you might want like a power washer, snow blower, etc. and don't forget to budget for those things you'll just want to spend money on once you have a home, like patio furniture, a BBQ grill and things like that. None of it essential, but you'll find that there are a lot of little things you'll find that you need, like snow shovels for instance, that you'll spend money on and those little things add up.

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
Gas for heat - 150 in January, 30 in July = approx 800 a year
Electricity for light and a/c in the summer - 25 in January and 145 in July = approx 800 a year
Water - 26 per month = 312 a year
Internet/Dish/Telephone - 100 per month = 1200 a year
Cell phone is another 100 per month for 2 phones = 1200 a year
Sewer - 71 per month = 852 a year
Maintenance - 172 per month = 2064 a year
Home owners insurance - 400 a year
I would also keep an emergency fun for repairs

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
I'm surprised how much everyone pays for water!
We pay $10 for 3 months. Over the summer it goes to maybe $50 for those 3 months.
appox: 150 - gas 150 - electricity 150 - cable/internet 20 - phone 3 - water
we do spend about $800-1000 on landscaping a year (spring, summer and fall clean up - not weekly)

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
When we moved into our place, we asked our seller for his approx costs. We had never owned before and our old apt included everything.
He told us and it helped a lot since many of the costs depend on your individual appliances, home size, location, etc.

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
Oil starts in october last delivery is around april or may and is ~350 every 6 weeks
Internet/phone/cable-130/mo (triple play)
Electric lately has been $240 every 60 days but the bill shows half of it is in surcharges not actual electric use (how does LIPA get away with it!)
Insurance $90
Water $40
Landscaper FREE b/c DH does it
Cellphone $190 family plan
Then food and money for repairs vary

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
I have a 3 bedroom ranch. I think it is important to ask what type of house and if there is more then one zone. And I am a SAHM so I am home all day long. We also have gas heat/stove.
We have a single zone since it is a ranch. Our bills are as follows.
LIPA $270/month National Grid $85/month Cable/Internet/Phone $165/month Water $35/I think it is quarterly

Re: How much does it cost to run your home...on top of your mortage?
Gas or/and Oil: Oil $225 a month on balanced billing (usually wind up with the last month free)
Water: anywhere from $33-45 for 3 months
Electric: $125 a month also on balanced billing (again we are usually ahead at the end of the year)
Internet/Cable: I think it's up to $180 now (with an upgraded package) include phone and internet.
The other expenses that you might incur could be taxes (if not part of your monthly mortgage payment) and common charges if you live in a Town-house or other typed of planned community.
