Why would you take Clomid unmonitored? Your doctor should NOT be prescribing it to you if they are not going to be on top of you monitoring. I took Clomid for a few cycles and I can tell you that my doctor did blood work before and after each round of Clomid as well as sonos before and after to ensure my ovaries weren't being overstimulated by the medication. If I were you, I would RUN..........not walk to an RE. OB/GYN's, while good doctors with some working knowledge of fertility, are NOT the same as an RE who are EXPERTS. Going to the RE was the BEST, BEST, BEST thing I ever did.
Even my OB who monitored me on the Clomid was just so quick to prescribe it without even really knowing what was going on with me or exploring other avenues of treatment and at the time I didn't know any better. Now I do and let me tell you, the RE was awesome!! They tested me for everything and I wasn't just put on Clomid which seems to be the standard protocol for every OB when they hear your cycles are irregular.
I had irregular cycles and I wasn't always ovulating and with the RE I was able to get pregnant in FOUR months with NO Clomid which was amazing considering how many months I wasted with my OB. I LOVE my OB........as an OB, not as a fertility specialist. I took Metformin to help regulate my cycles and Provera to bring on AF and in four months I ovulated on my own and was pregnant. I wanted to avoid Clomid and I did. Also note......your limited to a LIFETIME maximum of 12 Clomid cycles because it thins the lining of your uterus over time. That being said, if you do REALLY need Clomid the last thing you want to do is waste cycles with a doctor who isn't monitoring you closely.
I HIGHLY recommend you make an appt. with an RE. Infertility is their expertise and they are the doctors who are best equipped to help you. Really, I would NOT just start taking Clomid without further testing and options explored or without getting a second opinion. Good luck!

I really think you should make an appt with the RE because I dont think you should take that stuff unmonitored and "just see what happens"... I think its best to have a plan in place.
A red flag should be that your doc just gave you the perscriptions and didnt really say much. If you went to an RE, Im sure they would explain exactly what you are taking and what to look for, how long you would be taking this for, etc. Good luck!!!!

clearly the clomid cycle is unmonitored - she didnt even tell me when to come back, just to take it cd5-9 and keep temping  now that i think about it i didnt look at the RX before bringing it to the pharmacy so im not even sure if she prescribed more than one clomid cycle.
so now im debating whether to try and get in to an RE (didnt get to ask her anything about them) or just do the provera clomid cycle and see what happens...
i know it's scary but please, please go to an RE. they can not only confirm if you have PCOS (which sometimes responds to Clomid, but there are other options too) but they can also monitor you on the Clomid, if that is what you want to do, to make sure you don't BD if you have 6 or 8 huge follies!
you will get pregnant. you just need the proper diagnosis and treatment. and even if you don't have PCOS, the RE will know what you should do.

Take from someone who as BTDT! The other thing to remember too is that even if you temp and use OPKs with Clomid and you do have PCOS, the results may not be accurate. Just an example:
The last Clomid cycle I did before moving to IVF, I took an OPK on CD12 and got a +OPK (UNHEARD OF FOR ME that early). I went to the RE the next morning for bloodowork and a sono. The sono revealed not one mature or near mature follicle and my bloodwork looked the exactly the same as it did on my CD3 bloodwork. NOWHERE NEAR ovulating.
There are been many debates on this board about whether or not you should be monitored, but so many of us have been in your shoes before and wasted so much time before going to a RE, we just don't want to see anyone else go through what we've gone through.

Make an appointment to see an RE.
She should have been more specific about your 1st round of Clomid. I'm starting my 2nd tomorrow & I have to keep a BBT chart, go in for follow up in 2 weeks, start using an OPK a few days after I finish the Clomid pills. I had to have blood tests before starting.
Theres alot to be told before dismissing you from her office with a prescription in hand.
I can give you the name of mine if you like - he's in Nassau County.

That is really crappy of the doctor. You sound like you have a ton of questions that went unanswered. I think you should defin find a new doctor. Good luck with everything. You deserve to be treated better than this.

FWIW, I was petrified of going to an RE. I don't think I slept for days leading up to the appt.
After the appt, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted from us. I felt hopeful, informed and excited.
It can be a scary, intimidating step, but I think it would be worth it for you The RE will do a lot of testing to find out what else could be going on w/ u. Knowing is better than not knowing bc once u know what the issues are, the RE will take steps to correct them.
Also, like the PP all said, u really should be monitored on Clomid. There are side effects (like overstimulation) and that will only be known by monitoring. {Monitoring is just going in for blood and a sono at different points throughout the cycle.}

Good luck!!! One of my BFF's used Braverman and LOVED him!!!!!! She's pregnant and it only took a few months. I have heard he is wonderful. I am SO glad you called an RE. Good choice and good luck!!

I haven't been on this board in awhile, but I wish you all the best. Your cycles sound very familiar to me - I had 30-60 day cycles (mostly exactly 60) after going off BCP and my OB started treating me after 6 months off BCP, which was their deadline for my cycles re-regulating themselves. Looking back, my OB was not best suited for this, but bloodwork confirmed I was ovulating and ruled out a few other issues (progesterone, prolactin, etc.) and I started clomid - it didn't work, but DH and I got lucky since I spontaneously ovulated that cycle the weekend of my birthday and managed to get a BFP (still pregnant, 29 weeks now). Anyway, I was very quickly then put on thyroid meds since my initial pregnancy bloodwork showed it was underactive - I just wanted to throw that out there as another possibility. Looking back, I probably should've been on synthroid well before I got pregnant - my PCP had said before my thyroid was on the low end of normal and opted not to treat me but I saw her last week and before she realized I was pregnant and told her I was already on synthroid, she was going to suggest that if I was still low, that I go on it, and thyroid issues can certainly affect cycles and fertility. But regardless of what the issue may be, an RE is definitely the best person to figure it out and appropriately monitor you. I was not monitored on clomid and that made me uncomfortable and was probably a mistake - it didn't matter in the end, but that's only because I got really lucky. All the best to you!!!
