Flu shot related---this only would happen to me...

So i went for DD 1 year checkup yesterday and she was only supposed to get 2 shots. I spoke to the doctor and decided I did not want to get the flu shot for DD. She agreed. The nurse came in and i put DD on the table and she did one shot. Then my mom was there with me since she watches DD and she said to me that there were 3 shots and she was only supposed to get to. DD was crying of course from the first shot so when I went to ask the nurse what she was getting she stuck the 3rd one in without answering me and then came out and said the two shots and the flu shot. I explained to her that she wasnt supposed to get it and she admitted she made a mistake and misread what the doctor wrote! I was soo upset at the time. I am much better now and I guess everythign happens for a reason. My friend that is in nursing school called right as i left the doctors to tell me i shoudl get it for DD because they are all saying its supposed to be a very bad flu season even without the whole swine flu thing. I guess there is nothing I can do about it now. Just thought I woudl share. I am usually very cautious about what shots are given etc. but you figure these peopel know what they are doing. Thank god it was only the flu shot and not something else!!! Thansk for listening!

This in my opinion is an inexcusable mistake for a ped's office to make - what if your DD were allergic to eggs and the flu shot could have been dangerous for her? Thank god she isn't and it wasn't a more serious mistake!

Can I be honest? I am the last person to raise hell about anything. I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason, etc., BUT I feel that in this situation, you really need to look into taking further action. This could be an ongoing issue for this nurse and I would hate to think that anyone else would have to have it happen if it was my kid and I didn't say anything. Just as a previous poster said, what if your child had an egg allergy? You really need to call the dr. and complain LOUDLY. If not for yourself, then for other children, as well.

While I do believe in the flu shot - I would be VERY angry if someone gave either of my DD's a shot that I had not given permission for. While it is good she got the shot I would still talk to the doctor about what will be said to the nurse - only b.c if there was a reason your DC couldn't get the shot (egg or antibiotic allergy) then that could have been a very serious mistake. This is a mistake that CANNOT be happening.

BTW I had a similar incident at Columbia Presbyterian. I didn't want DD#2 to get the Hep B shot in the hospital I give it when DD has her first visit with our ped after being released from the hospital at around 1-2 weeks of age. Well while I was being stitched up in the OR room following my section they told me they were taking DD for her vitamin K shot and eye drops and they were giving her Hep B. DH and I said NO we don't want her to have it now she gets it with her 1st ped appt and with the fact she was slightly hypoglycemic we didn't want her to have it at that time the nurse said sorry it is NYS law and she was giving the Hep B anyway - and ran away with DD#2.

ITA - and FTR I did give my DC the flu shot. But something like this needs to be brought to the doctor's attention.

I would want to know what precautions were being taken in the future to avoid mistakes like that again. I don't think that is an acceptable mistake and would be uncomfortable bringing my child back to that office. If the nurses make mistakes like that what other mistakes have they or do they make?

That is a HUGE mistake and I would not take that lightly regardless at what vaccine it was. My DD is allergic to eggs and that would have been a terrible mistake in my case. At my office we have to sign and read the labels for the vaccine and confirm that is what we want given prior to them being administered. I thought that was standard practice everywhere. I would leave that office, what other things do/can they misread?

ITA. And I did get DS the flu shot, but I would be really angry if it was given to him without my permission even by accident.

It would make me wonder about the staff as well and the other mistakes they might be making. I'm glad DC didn't have a bad reaction and all worked out, but it's pretty inexcusable.
