I am so out of touch with “the young people”

Has anyone experienced this lately….I went out to see a band last night and at the aftershow party I met some people, 3 of them…young (one was 20 (gulp) anyway, at the end of the night (okay I stayed out until 2 am on a school night last night…) Anyway, at the end of the night they all said “whats your name, facebook me or I’ll facebook you” and lo and behold…this morning I got a facebook friend request from one of them. How random is that…I can’t believe she even remembered my name, she was quite drunk!!!

So is this “facebooking” the most bizarre thing or what???

I feel like those who meet you once and want to "facebook" you -- are usually the typcial "Friend Collector".

People who FB anyone they meet and add to the friend count. Its definitely something you see more of these days.

I despise friend collectors, and if I just met you...I usually will deny them.

Re: I am so out of touch with “the young people”

actually I dont find that strange and tend to do it with some new people. A good example is I met this girl 1 yr ago at the mall and we start talking and I gave her my email so she can "facebook me". From that exchange we became very good, faster than if for example we exchange number or something.. I feel like I wouldnt feel comfortable giving her my number at that point and It is kind of akward talking to someone through the phone that you just met. We talk through facebook a couple of times and a couple of emails later we made plan to gtg again. Also I am in my early 20, I don't know if that have to do with the way I feel about the situation..

I have to laugh, in the old days, when I was young, I used to met people at gigs (mainly at aftershows or in the ladies rooms) and then I would just keep running into them at other shows and just talk and exchange phone numbers (landlines) and become friends that way (I met two of my best friends in the ladies toilets at the Reading Music Festival in 1996) but now with Facebook...its just so immediate. It does make me laugh!

eta...springchick, I am an oldie but a goodie compared to you! I think its a super modern way to meet people! I love it!

I met someone at a concert in Webster Hall and the next day she friended me on facebook. I took pics at the concert by doing that she was able to see the pics. We randomly message each other when shows are going to be in the area that we think will be good.

I think it's a good way to meet new people. People you saw once but would love to get to know more and may not have the opportunity to meet again IRL for a while or maybe never.

Yeah, I guess this is the era we are in. With Facebook I have found that you either love it or hate it for meeting and reconnecting with people this way.

Re: I am so out of touch with “the young people”

I think it's the new norm, but only among people just a little younger than me, people who grew up having the Internet at home since high school. I have to believe that that's why some of my younger "friends" on Facebook have upwards of 400 friends, and that most people my age (31) have between 100-200. The younger people "friend" everyone they've ever met.

btw, was it St. Etienne you saw in concert? If so, I'm surprised people that young knew who they were!

Re: I am so out of touch with “the young people”

I think it took the place for what was exchanging phone numbers. It is less awkward and if you determine the person is odd, you can delete them. If they have your phone number, what do you do?

There were tons of all kind of people there, young and old. The have just released a remix album of Foxbase Alpha (Foxbase Beta) They still put out records and currently are rereleasing some oldies but goodies! they were doing Foxbase Alpa live(it was awesome) I know Bob (friend of a close friend) and hadn't seen him in a few years, so it was an awesome gig and nice to see some people I knew!

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'm happy to know they're still around. "You're in a Bad Way" pulled me out of many a bad mood when I was in college.

I tried to make a video when they played that, but the sound was crap. You can make do with this hysterical video from 1993...who do you think you are

Exactly, some people just like to collect friends on Facebook...so annoying.
