I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

so DH & I have loved the named Joseph Matthew Perotti (YES we are still having difficulty with boys names!!!!!) since day 1....however my best friends dogs name is Josef (lol) and she calls him joe bear....I KNOW, ridiculous for it to even be my concern!!! but at first I was like H E L L no, I can't get past the fact that my best friends dog would have the same name as my child (if it turns out he's a boy).....

so last night, we kind of went back to it after me cutting it out months ago.....I can't help but picture our little Joey running around the house....

Would you still name your son Joseph?? WWYD???

ETA: I know I'm ridiculous for asking this Chat Icon

I voted yes. To me it doesn't matter if your best friend's dog has the same name.

you know, not ridiculous at all, I honestly wouldn't know what to do about it, if my best friends dog had the name I wanted for my DS.

I don't care what people say, but if the association in my mind is that strong, it will really bother me.

Sorry I'm no help Chat Icon

Re: I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

Nah, I don't think I would let it stop me from using a name I loved.

Or, maybe I would. Lily and Emma were off limits for me because MIL has a cat named Lily and used to have a dog named Emma. I couldn't use them anyway, for other reasons, but I also don't know if I could have gotten beyond that.

Another non-helpful poster here-sorry!

It seems crazy to not be able to get past it, but if it is a dog that I know well, and see all of the time, it would bother me to call my son by the same name!

Re: I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

Yes, Joseph just happens to be the dog's name but it's generally a human name.

Now if the dog's name was Fido and you named your son Fido, then I would be concerned. LOL

Re: I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

I couldn't do it. I can't name my kids anyone else's name that I know, or after animals.

It just bothers me that that person would think that I named my kid after THEM or their pet and be all proud that I wanted something named after them.

And after all that trouble to make sure that my kid's name was unique to our family...one of my family members just named their kid the same as mine

It would not matter to me!! But I know people who feel your way.....5 years ago I named my chihuahua Isabella, and my cousin flipped and wanted me to change her name b/c one day if and when she had a girl she wanted to name her Isabella. I stuck with my name and 3 years later my cousin had a girl whom she reluctantly named Isabella.

Funny you say that. Dh I got a puppy last year and we tried to think of so many names and I wanted to call her Lucy..she wouldn't answer to it. I called her Bella and she responded! That was her name. Now I can not name my child Isabella and I've always loved that name.

Also, we love Sofia & Giuliana, but I have cousins (who are 2 & under) named that so I wouldn't do it.

So, I can see how you wouldn't want to name your child that. But, I wouldn't think it was wierd if you did name your child that either!

Re: I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

There are certain names that I consider pet names, and Joseph isn't one of them! Besides the fact that it is both my dad and grandpa's name.

Now if you wanted to name your baby Spot, I would say you have a problem!!Chat Icon

I completely agree. DH best friend and wife planned on naming their daughter Olivia. They came over our house for a BBQ and met our new dog which we named Olivia. They both looked at each other and were Chat Icon and then they both Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon at the coincidence. They had their baby girl and went with the initial plan and named her Olivia.

Re: I have a stupid question regarding boys names....

even knowing WHY, or should I say who you have an issue with this being the dogs name, I have said from the get go that it shouldnt matter. I loves all your front runners for boys names, but Im SO glad you brought that one back bc thats my favorite. But you know me, Im biased....I like classic boys names....heck, your nephew is named Edward, LOL.

YAY for Joseph! How cute would Eddie and Joey be????

Seriously though, if you two have come back around to it and you love it that much, that its still nagging at you, then you should go for it. You may always wish you had, you may not, but what if you do?. Kids trump dogs, so I wouldnt worry. If you both picture a little Joey running around when you think of a boy, then I think, thats the one. Youll never even think about the association. And if you know who brings it up, Im sure mom will put her in her place and youll never hear another word about it.

with a name like joseph, it wouldnt bother me. it's a standard boy name not generally associated with a dog. some names are harder. one of my dogs is bailey and my friend said she had wanted to name a daughter bailey one day but couldnt because of my dog. that i understand because bailey is a common dog name and unique person name. kwim?
