Is it odd for a home to get RATS, esp for a wooded area?

So Suffolk people...went to see a house. And apparently whomever was selling (family member of an older person) they didn't look around enough b/c the basement had a RAT trap sitting right out. To make matters worse, in the yard, we saw a rat bait station (that an exterminator puts down).

Needless to say, it turned us off. Would you be turned off? How odd is it for a house on a wooeded property to have rats that get into the home? Would any of you still bid on this home or would you say NO WAY? I just don't know how common this may be in some areas, for rats or other small animals to find a way into the home. I know mice are fairly common and pesky, but rats?????? What do you think?

I would definitely be turned off......and would most likely not want any part of it. But thats just me though.

I assume they are field rats of some sort especially if you say its a wooded area. But to have such a problem like that, to have traps, I would run the other way and not look back! LOL

That's what we thought...that they have enough of an issue that they have to KILL them with poision outside so they don't make it in....then if they do get in, let's get them with the good old snap trap. LOL

Needless to say, we won't be bidding. We can't take the chance, but we still want to know, is there any chance this is a quite likely occurence in a wooded area? Or no???

I lived in a wooded area in Suffolk growing up and we never had RATS. AHH! First time I ever saw one was in the subway tracks.

You have to FM where this house was...I'm going house shopping tomorrow and hope that's not on my list! Chat Icon

is there any construction near by? Like a new house being built?
Sometimes construction will disrupt the area they live in and they will look to make new homes.
I live in a heavily wooded area & I had field rats that got into my greenhouse last winter, although I'm pretty careful about storing the chicken feed and snacks in containers the rats realized I sometimes left small bags or birdseed out. A tasty treat to them.
We handled it with traps.
Is it possible that house has lots of dog food or other stuff in the basement that the rats go after?

It's a concrete basement...I don't think so...don't think there is ANY food items down there at all.

My concern is even if you kill and catch them, what if you can NEVER fix where they are coming in? Never find where they are coming in? KWIM? That's our concern.

Definitely possible. My BIL lives in East Meadow and one of his neighbors had a rats nest under their shed. Chat Icon

Under a deck or shed, I can understand. But in the house???? That is way more freaky.

Our fix was easy, we filled in the big whole they chewed threw the wood under a window.

I'd bet there's something for them to eat in that basement or they wouldnt be there.

My parents live in a wooded area in Northport and they get rats in their basement from time to time. They also live across the street from a very wooded sump, so the easy access to water might have something to do with it.

Aha...

It's a basement that had water issues.....hmmm....you are on to something here. What do your parents do about it? Can they find where they are coming in?

Me too-Keep looking there are PLENTY of houses out there. Don't overlook FSBO's on Craigslist. Liek you said what if you can never find out where they are coming from?

They have an exterminator on speed dial. He told them that they get in when the garage door is left open, even during the day, and by squeezing through the bottom when its closed. They're looking always for food and/or water, so my parents are vigilant about a clean, dry basement. Despite this, they still get them from time to time.

We had rats living under our old concrete patio. We initially got rid of them with poison and eventually solved the problem when we re-did our back patio.

are you looking near the water...I'm afraid to say it goes with the "territory"

but ITA that inside the house is a bit skeevy. Is there a dryer downstairs? I've heard of animals getting in through a dryer vent

the norway rats are cuter than your city rat

We think they are getting in through a water "trap" thingy in the basement... My DH looked in and saw tree roots sticking out, so basically the ground was sort of exposed. Also the garage door did not touch the floor so they could get in through there, b/c there was a basement door in the garage.

It wasn't that near to the water at all though...

Was the patio elevated like a deck? How can they live under concrete? Did they ever try to make their way into your home/basement?

They found openings and burrowed under the patio.

Never had them in our basement or home though.

Well I grew up down the road form the water and had woods right next door to us, and NEVER had a rat near/in our house. I think in the 15 yrs we lived there, we only had one mouse until the cat found him. I would SOOO pass on that. I can handle anything but Rats. Chat Icon

Re: Is it odd for a home to get RATS, esp for a wooded area?

i would pass but certain areas as people said that have wooded sumpy areas will have rats. I have seen them walking around near the marina from time to time only when we are up very late walking around in the summertime.

my brother lives near a horse farm in Southold and he never had rats but field mice yes. I have seen rats though in Northport because of bad garbage, dog food, bird seed habbits. My friend had their stuff all out not under lock and they had rat nests in the garage.

Perhaps they had a problem fixed the dirty areas up and set traps to make sure the pests were gone.

I would walk away--rats I cannot stand. You could get them anywhere no matter how clean you are (when the weather gets cold, they look for warm places to live and if there is the tiniest nook available to them, they'll find a way inside. But buying a house that definitely showed signs of rat activity, no!

But if you love the house, I would get an exterminator to take a look at the house and property before you make an offer.
