Why? Is there peace? Are we giving Nobel peace prizes for 9 months worth of efforts now? What about people who have strived their whole lives and careers for peace. Really? 9 months in with absolutely no results warrants a Nobel Peace Prize?

To be honest, I am quite disappointed in this choice. I agree, its premature and to me reaks of political pandering. It really diminshes the significance and honor of that prize to me.

ITA!!!

I find it insulting to past winners

IMO this cheapens the award. I am sorry but I don't think it should be awarded for "good intentions"

but, they ALL are awarded for good intentions.

look at the 1994 winners....is there peace between Israel and Palenstine?

look at 2007 winners....have we stopped climate change.

like I said, I agree that this isnt' the right time for him to win...but it's not really that far fetched.

people are using the date of his Inauguration...but if you really thought about it, he created a buzz and a stir throughout the entire WORLD long before he was elected our president.

his campaign stumps often addressed world and peace issues as part of his plan.

now, AGAIN I would say that there are others who could also easily be awarded this great honor (Bono, Benazir Bhutto- posthumously Chat Icon) but we shouldn't demand different ideals or results from the winner just b/c we think it's "too soon" or he hasn't accomplished world peace. that isn't really fair, either.

I agree with this. His speech at the White House was extremely humble and he even said he felt like he really didn't deserve it yet. He said he hopes he can live up to all that the prize stands for.

Chat Icon Chat Icon I completely agree. He very well may end up living up to all that this honor stands for, but to award it to him NOW does seem political.

While I agree that the Nobel Peace Prize seems premature.. it makes sense that they are awarding it based on the changes in the climate due to his election. It is almost as though they are giving it to him in good faith.

So - good for him. I hope he earns this award with continued action.

My thoughts exactly. Also, it was not even 9 mos. The article said that the deadline for the decision was FEBRUARY 1ST! That would make it a whopping 2 weeks worth of effort.

I couldn't agree more. Ridiculous.

But those people were awarded for their work devoted towards that goal. I think Obama's two weeks in office before the nomination doesn't justify this award.

Next year, maybe. But this year- with a record of 205 nominees, I have to believe that of those 205 nominees there is someone who strived for peace for more than his 2 weeks in office and his short political career.

It is an understatement to say it was premature to make the decision to give him the NPP when he was two weeks into office... IMO, he should not have been awarded based on expectations of what he would do. And it seems like that is exactly what happened here...

I don't think it's about "fixing" a problem totally.... not saying there has to be world peace in order to give him the NPP. Just saying there should have been more work done toward it before it was awarded.

I think this is sad for people who have won and for people who have not. I am not a huge fan of Bill Clinton's -- but ihe has done more than Obama w/ international diplomacy;.

can I ask why we are focusing on his 2 weeks in office? you don't have to be a politician or a political leader to be nominated, so there doesn't seem to be a reason why they would be basing it on those two weeks after he became president.

and I agree (and I said) that there are more people in the world who have worked at it longer and that I was very surprised by it.

I just don't think the award is "cheapened" and I certainly don't believe it detracts from past winners.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

i don't see the big issue why there is somewhat of an outrage over this. I agree it should of been put off until next year but it was not. It is a positive award and so far obama is attempting to be a positive peaceful individual.

In 1973 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to the North Vietnamese leader Le Duc Tho and the US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The international reaction was critical, and two of the Nobel committee members resigned. Le Duc Tho refused the prize on the grounds that peace was not yet a reality for Vietnam.

In 1998 the Nobel Prize for Medicine went to a scientist whose work led to the discovery of Viagra

I think this is more of an insult to the existence of this award then Obama.

I don't see how this is relevant at all?? If the scientist was given the Nobel Peace Prize for discovering Viagra, I would agree. But he/she wasn't -- it was a prize in the medicine category.

I'm not saying to be antagonostic... I just don't understand the comparison.

Edited to fix typos.

I disagree and I want to clarify my statement.

Yes, all of the winners worked with the intention of bringing about peace. HIS work, seems to still be in the goal making phase. That is wonderful, I hope that he succeeds. However, I don't feel like there has been enough ACTION yet.

Even though I did not vote for him, I support our president 100% and I am in no way bashing him. I am disagreeing with the Nobel committee.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

Even if you go back to Obama's campaign, and count that, what has he truly done to promote peace? Made a few "peace-type" speeches (which he probably didn't even write). I don't feel safer because he is in office nor do I feel we are any closer to have peace in this world. Just because you speak of peace and apologize to the world for everything the US has ever done, does not change the world.

And knowing the names of past recipients and putting Obama in the same category with many of them, yes to me it does cheapen the award.

The Nobel Committee said it decided to honor Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

I don't know what work he has done to strengthen internatinoal diplomacy while a US Senator, or even before his political career. His work as a lawyer and professor focused on domestic issues, not foreign diplomacy.

first of all, I watch the NEWS and get all my "detractors" and their comments from there. I wasn't speaking specifically of the esteemed "detractors" of LIF. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon the WORLD also commented on this, in case you didnt' know Chat Icon Chat Icon (as did every single news outlet.) but I will say that there seems to be a "pattern" if you will of those who are not big fans of Obama making the bigger deal, both in this world and the real one.

"In its surprise choice, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited the president's creation of a "new climate in international politics" and his work on nuclear disarmament, even though he is just nine months into his presidency."

in this mindset, although STILL a dark horse, a decent case CAN be made for it.

whether we want to believe it or not (or give him credit or not) he HAS changed something in the world. and that is MAJOR. especially given our position as a country on the world stage.

let's take our bow, humbly, and help our president earn this great award.

all I am saying....is give peace a chance

i absolutely loved this:

"After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, 'Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday.' And then Sasha added, 'Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.' So it's — it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective."

My DH found this online this morning

"While it is OK to give school children prizes for 'effort' -- my kids get them all the time -- I think international statesmen should probably be held to a higher standard," Gideon Rachman - Financial Times

And I'd like to add that although there isn't peace in some of the places that past winners have worked for it, they worked long and hard at it and may have had some degree of success, even if their goal wasn't full realized. I'm not sure if 9 months is enough effort and enough time to gauge how effective he's been.

I'm not even an Obama hater. I generally like Obama, although I disagree with some of his decisions. Like promoting the George Lopez show on TBS - Since WHEN should our PRESIDENT be promoting a tv show?!!

that was Chat Icon and basically what I mean.

I don't envy Obama's position. he's been made almost into a Christ-like personage, and this award does NOTHING to help that. and regardless of political ideals, I don't think that as a person, he deserves the inevitable crucifixion to come. Chat Icon
