Spath plant question...

I have a black thumb. I admit it. I kill plants. Chat Icon Poor guys are given a death sentence when I buy them or receive them as a gift.

Sooooo - DH and I bought an enormous spath for our bedroom. It had two flowers on it (if that's what they are - white with the nubby thing). Both flowers died.

Will new ones grow? Any advice/home remedies on how to perk it up?

The leaves aren't as glossy as they used to be - I believe I water it enough but what's a good test? The top layer of soil should always be damp?

Did I mention that he's enormous? Because he is. His name is Sparky. Sparky Spath. So if you can answer me - feel free to refer to him by his given name.

Re: Spath plant question...

Here's what I found online...

Spath plants are wonderful, low maintenance house plants that can bloom twice a year with appropriate care.

Watering and Fertilizer
Spath plants are susceptible to root rot, so it is important that you check the soil moisture by sticking your finger down into the soil an inch or two before you add water to the plant. If it feels damp dry, it is time to water. Generally, watering once a week--making sure the soil is thoroughly moist--will do, except when the weather is hot in the summer, then you may need to water mid week also. Spath plants enjoy humidity, but do not like to be misted much on their leaves. Use a damp cloth on the leaves to add humidity and clean dust off of them. Occasionally, give your spath a shower in your shower, just make sure it does not remain in standing water after.

Light and Temperature
One of the attractions of spath plants is that they thrive in low light and are perfect for areas of your home that may be too dark for other house plants. The leaves will sunburn in direct light. Another indication your spath may be getting too much light is if the outside leaves of the plant start turning yellow. Move your plant to a more filtered-light area.
The spath enjoys the same temperatures you do, though it does not do well if temperatures are below 55 degrees F. Locate your spath plant where it will not have irregular temperature changes from drafts or heat sources.

This is dead on correct.

I have a small one and used to care for a large one in my old office. They just need weekly watering, and once a month, take a damp piece of paper towel and wipe down the leaves. They do lose their glossy look after a while, which is totally normal as a leaf ages. My small spath flowers every other month or so and all we do is water it once a week or when the leaves begin to droop.

Just make sure you don't have it in a well lit area. It likes low light.
