Does anyone live near a fire department?

how is the noise level?

we're looking at a house that's quite close to a fire station, and we already live near by and hear it in the distance. its not annoying from here, but i guess it would be if we were closer?

We live like a mile away from the firehouse and you can still here it. You'd probably want to look into when they can put the alarm off, I know our fire house has restrictions.

we have a small station in our neighborhood, its walking distance from my house but not that close. They don't do a noon whistle and usually even if there's a fire they don't use the whistle in this station, just the main station about 2 miles away.
I like having them close by

My high school was literally next to the fire station. I remember the noise being annoying, but you almost got used to it.

I grew about 2 blocks from a firehouse. We really got used to the fire horn. I never thought it was that bad.

I would be concerned for resale value living too close to a fire station.

i walked by there just this afternoon, but they were closed.


the seller's are adamant about their sale price...i think they could come down solely based on the proximity to the fire house.

I used to live across the street from one, I beleive when they are in a residential neighborhood they are a bit quiter and don't use the sirens (unless they need to)

I never even knew they were there.

I grew up in a house around the block from one. We heard the siren go off, but eventually learned to tune it out. Sometimes, it would go off, and people would ask me what the sound was, and I totally didn't hear it until they mentioned it.
And it didn't affect the resale value of the home at all. My parents sold a few years ago, and got almost the full amount they were asking pretty quickly.
Plus, it was nice to know if there was ever a fire, we were pretty safe!

I did. I lived in an apartment complex not far from it. The next street over.

One of the tenant warned me about it so I would not freak out at night.

It's LOUD!!! They had sirens at night. You do get used to it. It's harder in the summer when the windows are open. You WILL wake up at 2am.

I grew up on the same block as the fire station and I never noticed the siren. They don't blare it at night and the trucks never drove like maniacs down the block. The only ones we ever had a problem with were the volunteer FF because they would drive like maniacs to get to the station when there was a call, but my parents just taught us to stay away from the street because, in all honesty, they'd rather us stay back so they could do their jobs. I digress, my point being that it was never a problem.

Why? First of all, you'll get an insurance break (or at least we did) for it being so close to the fire station...


I was just going to post the same thing!

We live 2 homes down from a fire station. Is it loud when it goes off? yes it is. But the alarms NEVER sound after dark.

I grew up 3-4 blocks from a firehouse, depending on how you count the streets. My only thoughts about a firehouse are that I might not want to be on the block that may have trucks rushing through but I would actually like the safety of being near a firehouse. I have not heard of houses on my parents' block being reduced because of proximity to the firehouse or the railroad, both of which can be heard from the house.

I grew up two blocks from the firehouse and it was totally fine. My neighbor used to be a fireman and we would always know when he went on calls. I have to say I liked being close to the firehouse. It gave me peace of mind. The sirens went off but it was never in the middle of the night and never woke us up.

Now we live very close and I never hear the fire alarms go off.

we live about 1/4 mile from one. We have a small town so there aren't many calls.

when i lived in selden. i lived like maybe 10 blocks away and i could still hear it.

i grew up directly in back of a fire house. they had a siren daily at 12 and 6. we would never 'hear' it but guests would jump and ask what it was, we were so used to it though. i did go through a phase when i was about 3 years old that i did nt want to go outside and my parents thought it might have been from the daily siren.
it was always nice on fourth of july because they would do very nice fire works so it was like having our very own professional show in the backyard. (i dont know if they all do this though?)
sometimes they rent out the firehouse for parties but we never had an issue with it.

We're very close to the firehouse. We can see it clearly in winter when there are no leaves on the trees(woods behind me). It doesn't bother me at all. The noon siren goes off daily. I got used to it fast.

We're on the next block from the firehouse and it doesn't really bother us. Every once in a while it goes off at night but only when there's an emergency. It doesn't faze DD one bit b/c she's been near it since birth. She doesn't even wake when it goes off b/c I guess she's conditioned to sleep through it b/c it's a familiar noise. For us it's different b/c we're adults and didn't move here until a few years ago and I'm not a sound sleeper at all. Bottom line doesn't bother us and wouldn't keep me from buying a house. When it goes off during the day it doesn't bother me at all.
