I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

I am the last person to brag about my child (except for saying he is cute)

But being in the field that I'm in, I am not sure what is normal and what is above average. I know what is BELOW average in terms of language, skills, etc, but someone I worked with said you forget what typical kids can do.

That being said, Cailen turned 2 in April. He went from a few words to a huge language explosion after his 2nd birthday. I mean, he is FULLY conversational. It's not just that he can have a conversation, but it's the vocabulary he uses.

He will ask me questions - like, if I tell him I'm doing laundry, he will point to the basket I'm carrying and ask "Is that the dirty laundry?" He will ask me if I am going downstairs to clean it. He knows when things are upside down, empty, backwards, etc - but uses the right vocabulary. In full sentences...

He speaks in these long sentences and I can pretty much tell him anything and he understands. I can sit down and have a conversation with him.

Moms of kids the same age (April 07 babies) are you going through this too? I guess I expected things to come later because he is a boy, but I'm amazed at all this language. I guess, again, I'm not used to typical development... Is this pretty much the average 28 (almost 29 mt old) language?

I'll have him call Harvard - see what they say after they speak with him. What with the conversation degenerating into what bathroom function comes out of what body part (he can verbalize it beautifully but has yet to do any of said functions) I'm sure they won't be rushing the scholarship anytime soon! We're going through this here as well.

DS spoke first (way back whenChat Icon ) but DD is full blown 8-10 word sentences. Their teacher tells me they have a great vocabulary and my MIL says she's surprised by how well they speak (grammatically correct) for their age. I just brush it off because I don't know what's "normal" either.

Although "That is mine!!" has become "That's mine's" because of a classmate. After correcting DD once, she now corrects DSChat Icon Chat Icon

Although they were on a play date today at another posters house and barely said a wordChat Icon Chat Icon

Maybe we can GTG and the three of them can reenact one of the debatesChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

Kaitee is 3. She said a few short sentences at 1 but after her 2nd birthday her language really improved. By 2 1/2 she could speak like any normal person can and everyone could understand her. She was behind what I would consider normal(but what do I know what normal isChat Icon) before 2.

Brooke is 22 months old and can speak just as well as Kaitee. She has been able to or months. She has full conversations with strangers. I have 2 friends with kids that are 6-7 months older than her and they are amazed at her language because she speaks WAY more and more clear than their sons do. I give her talkativeness credit to Kaitee. Kaitee never shuts up so Brooke soaks it up from her. At 22 months old everyone that ever talks to her fully understands what she is saying and she always speaks in full sentences.

Sydney only turned 2 a few weeks ago - but I'm amazed with her sometimes. When DH yawned the other day she said "Are you tired?"...I think that's pretty darn good!

My co-worker who teaches speech told me that the rule of thumb is chronological age + 1 for the number of words that should be in a sentence. When I take the time to count Chat Icon DD's sentences have 6-8 words. (She was born in March 07).

Between her size and the way she speaks, people think she's 4.

I have a friend whose son is six weeks younger and he does not talk nearly as much as she does.

sounds like my ds (may 07). he knows everything and can explain himself in the most sophisticated way, ask the most thoughtful questions, and he just has a HUGE vocabulary and sounds like a 5 year old. he totally blows everyone that meets him away. that said, his feeding therapist (an slp) says he is way above average with language. so it sounds like cailen is too.

i just love being able to hear what is on his mind and we love teaching him about everything.Chat Icon

except at the park today (in front of a bunch of moms & kids) he tells me "mommy my balls itch!" Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

We can fully converse with DD, and everyone else can understand what she's saying too. She is never at a loss for words (Chat Icon , but seriously she never has to search for words or uses the incorrect words). And if she is learning a word for the first time, she studies my lips about how to say it, and from then on, there's no question about what it is, she knows exactly what it is.

Speech is her "thing"...eating, not so much Chat Icon

She turned 2 in June, she's been like this for months. Diana's husband even has a nickname for my DD (Jabberjaws Chat Icon )

Yea Chat Icon We've been going through this for a very long time. DD was a very early talker and it's just amazing to me how much we can converse. She talks like a real little person and is just so aware of everything and knows so much. She already quotes movies that she's watched over and over Chat Icon

It's scary how smart she is.

Yep. Our guys are only about a week apart and I have the same thing. In the car on the way home from daycare we have full conversations about what he did that day, who he played with, what he ate.

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

Liza you and I are in the same field and it can be a blessing as well as a curse. Every "typical" child I meet in my life, I find myself comparing to the students I teach. In my head, the typical children are "geniuses" when in fact, they are typically developing kids. Every once in a while, I come across an exceptional child who is truly advanced and just as often, I come across a child where a red flag is waving and I know there are underlying issues in that child's development. I should say that I am not a diagnostician and these opinons are solely based on years of professional experience as a teacher with special needs. When friends ask for my opinions on their children or any other child, I make sure I tell them that and if there is a question, I suggest evaluations.

That being said, Abby drops her pacifier and says "DAH" (down) and I am looking to lock in 2009 prices for college. She tucks her head under in gym class and I am calling Bela Karolyi to sign her up for coaching. I am so proud of her and it is hard not to get carried away!

Oh, I would never say he's a genius. Someone once said they are all smart At this age and its true! I don't get bowled over by his brilliance. He delights me and makes me laugh and his words are a way for us to have fun together. But in this field I am aware of the differences and know really he is a typical little boy. I'm not really thinking Harvard! I'm thinking thank god this child has no fear stating his opinions and being who he is! But daycare definitely is responsible for almost all his skills!

I think it has alot to do with the parents and encouraging them versus saying SHHHH all the time when they try to express themselves. Taylor just turned 2 August 6th and the Ped says she is advanced in comparison to full term 2 year olds so I am that mom that uber appreciate and will brag at times lol because I know she could be on the other end of the spectrum being born 2 monhs early. Is she a genius no but I know she has great potential to be a really smart kid if we continue to encourage her and love her. So continue what you mommies are doingChat Icon

Thank goodness. You'll end up breeding a Red Sox fan and I would not be able to have him on Abby's dance card. Chat Icon

Besides, we have two perfectly good Ivy League Schools in NY State.

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

I too have noticed a very big vocabulary jump as far as the words he uses and the clearness of them. However Calien seems more advanced in the long sentence structure. DS (born May 2007) has not hit that point yet.

I do also notice a lot of singing songs (ABC's, Music Together songs etc)

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

My sister has three kids and the first one could have a full conversation with you at 2 years old. She had a great vocabulary. The other two where just average, and just spoke single words or short sentences at 2. So, I would say it is above average for a 2 year old.
Well, at least I would think it was above average if it was my DS.Chat Icon

Re: I hate being this mom, but I have to know...

DS was speaking in 2-3 word sentences at a year old and by 20 months we were having full conversations with him. He was able to spell his name at 20 months. Everyone including the ped told us he was advanced for his age. Kids his age were not speaking at the level he was. But now that he will be 3 in a few weeks, the same kids that weren't at his level at 2 years old have caught up to him. I would like to think my son is a geniusChat Icon but I think it's just some kids develop quicker than others.

DD is 15 months and is on the same path DS was.
