I. Want. To. Vomit. Please help!
Ok, I cannot even believe this has happened, but, apparently, since Friday when we filled one of our garbage pails outside with bags from the kitchen, thousands of tiny fly larvae have hatched inside the can I am ready to yak all over right now. My husband went out to put the cans out tonight for the garbage men, and he opened up the top of the can and it was COVERED on the inside with fly larvae. I know that they're fly larvae because we live near the water and green flies are everywhere and especially near the garbage cans. So my question is, what in the world do I do to get rid of these things?! Everything we looked up says they're not easily killed. He didn't even put the can out for the garbage men because it was that disgusting and he didn't think to just tell them to take the whole pail and just junk it. I'm so grossed out. We already decided we're getting two new pails and will leave them in the garage until it's garbage day, but in the meantime, what the heck do we do? Anyone have any suggestions??? TIA!

BLEACH!!!!! I would just dump a bottle of bleach in there and leave it. Maybe they will suffocate to death or something.

I would definitely bleach it... I've gotten maggots in my pails before and bleach did the trick...

Unfortunately between dirty diapers and food waste we have this every week. Also I live in NC and they only collect 1X per week. One thing my mIL does is to freeze food waste and put it in the can the night before garbage night. That way it really cuts down on flies

How is this happening? I am trying to understand. Are you putting the trash in bags in the house, then putting the bags inside the outside trash can with the lid on?
I have never seen this, I thought if it was in bags AND in a covered can this would not happen?
I want to understand b/c I dont want this to ever happen!

i would bleach it and put it in a contractor size bag and double that a few times... put it out with the trash for next garbage day... (or if your daring... find one of those apartment complexes that have the dumpsters in the parking lot and dump it there...

I had it happen. WIth the summer heat any raw food can cause this. Bleach and hose it out.
even with a tight lid it still can get like this.

Ugh! I had to deal with that once & yes it is so gross! And this was INSIDE , b/c my college boyfriend's roommate was gross & never emptied his trash can.
I don't what to do in the meantime, but definitely toss the whole can--that's what I ended up doing (even thought the trash can didn't even belong to me.)

I would either do bleach or ammonia. I hope this works for you....

Re: I. Want. To. Vomit. Please help!
OK, first and foremost, thank you for all of the suggestions! It is the nastiest thing I have ever witnessed. So, what we did was go to Home Depot and get a huge plastic drop cloth and wrapped the crap out of the garbage pail so it's now all wrapped and duct taped so nothing can get in or out, and we'll label it so the garbage men will take the entire thing on Thursday. Then we bought brand spanking new garbage pails that will be kept in the garage from now on. What I think happened is that last week on Friday, I noticed that the lid was off one of the cans at the end of the day, so I went and put it back on, well it must have been enough time for all the horseflies to lay their eggs and since it's been sealed tight since Friday, the eggs must have hatched. VOMIT.
