Re: Should a little girl have this toy doll?

Ooooh...I'm probably in the minority here, but I find it a little tweakish. I don't think little girls need a doll to mimic the act of breastfeeding. I remember holding up a doll and pretending to do it when I was little but I highly doubt my mom (who is like the BIGGEST advocate of bf) would buy me a doll specifically to do that. Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

I might get flamed for this but I just don't think it's really necessary.

We complain that we live in a society where kids don't act like kids and that they're forced to grow up too soon.

Well, IMO, this is an example of the adults of the world shooting themselves in the foot.

Why do we need to give little girls a breastfeeding doll? Let them be kids! Not everything they play with has to be SO "real".

ETA: FTR, I have nothing at all against WOMEN breastfeeding their children and think it's a perfectly natural function but I just don't think it's something kids need to pretend doing.

Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

I find that a little disturbing, esp for little girls that know nothing about sex or baby making and what not..

Why does a kid that young need to know about breastfeeding? Are they getting pregnant anytime soon where they would need to know this information?Chat Icon

Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

I don't see why they needed to make a doll to mimic breastfeeding. My DDs just lift up their shirts and pretend to do it anyway.

same here, I think it is fine for children to pretent to BF (I am sure my dd will when she sees me BF'ing her brother) but no special aparatus is needed

Ha! I posted a link to this the other night (Breastfeeding Doll) and then at the last minute had a change of mind and took the post down.... I just found it rather odd and I didn't want to offend anyone! But I agree with above posters that the whole concept is not necessary, let them pretend play if they need to, but let them be kids.

Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

I'm a breastfeeding mother and a HUGE advocate for BFing. I don't see this doll as any different from the interactive dolls that come with bottles. That said, I can tell you I would likely not buy this doll for my daughter.

In fact, I can bet when they came up with the concept for this doll they were thinking of children like my daughter Madelyn.

Madelyn was 17 months old when her little sister Eliza was born. Eliza is completely fed from the breast as she totally refuses to take bottles. The only way Madelyn has ever seen Eliza being fed is by the breast, so it's only natural that when Madelyn *feeds* her dolls, she holds them to her chest.

That said, I think they missed the mark on what they were trying to acheive with this doll. Truth is, the American public is too squeamish about ADULT women breastfeeding let alone to allow its daughters to hold a baby to her chest and pretend to BF (complete with slurping noisesChat Icon ).

Agree completely. I think the makers figured it was an "untapped" market to make money off of.Chat Icon

Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

Ok, I don't think pretending to breastfeed a doll is gross. If that's how a child is exposed to feeding a baby, then it's normal. Like the article said, the US seems to sexualize breastfeeding, when in fact, it's purely vital for survival and not sexual at all. THAT BEING SAID, I find this doll disturbing because it's giving a confusing message to me. You already come equipped wiht what you need for breastfeeding, there really should be no need to put on fake nips to pretend to feed the baby. But I guess it's their response to bottle fed dolls that make eating noisesChat IconI guess Chat Icon

Re: Should a little girl have this breastfeeding doll?

I personally would not get this type of doll for my niece or for any future daughter of mine. I do not like the idea of a doll that has a mouth that sucks and makes sucking noises meant for a little girl to put up to her not-yet-existant boobs. Nothing wrong with adult women breastfeeding, but little girls can pretend with a regular doll that isn't moving it's mouth against their boobies.

Same here. Actually, she usually brings them to me to me BF because she doesn't have any milk yet Chat Icon

Anyway, I am a big breastfeeding advocate, and while I don't see anything wrong or "gross" about the doll, I just don't think it's necessary. If a little girl wants to play breastfeed, why does she need a special shirt & a doll that suckles? Chat Icon
