Re: LIPA Bill... KWH Used
Last year, we were using about 30kwh a day, peaking at 44kwh/day last August.
That was before I started using CFLs everywhere, put my electronics on power strips, switched from 4 window AC units to CAC, etc, etc...
With the solar panels, I make about 10kwh on a very overcast/rainy day, and I've gotten up to 40kwh on one very sunny day. I've been averaging around 30kwh/day over the last two months or so.

Re: LIPA Bill... KWH Used
That was what mine was about but my bill was an estimate and I know they estimated too high because last year it was much nicer this month and our pool was opened earlier and we were using ac sooner.

Re: LIPA Bill... KWH Used
Since LIPA does bi-monthly checks of the meter, my combined April and May usage was 471kwh, which came out to an average of 7.8kwh per day. My bill for those two months: $108.57.

Believe me that's cheap.
I average about 40KWH of usage every day. So using your example of 32 days thats about 1280KWH for the month.
And I have a relatively small house too! But I have a hot tub that uses a lot of electric in the winter, and I blast the hell out of my Central Air from May thru October that uses a lot of electric as well. I get no break from my electric usage with these two items.

You should really look into a solar heater for the pool. I bet the ROI would be one season, two tops. You'll still need the heater for overcast days, and to boost whatever the solar can't cover, but it would make a huge dent in your bills.

Where does the solar heater go? we are maxed out on space on the side of our house, do you know how big it is? we keep the pool at about 88 degrees, because our families use it, and they don't like it when its cold I am sure we could save a ton!

I'm assuming the first month was the estimated reading and the second month they did the actual reading.

Re: LIPA Bill... KWH Used
You think you're high???
Usage in 31 days for me is a whopping 1390 KWH......
I am curious what this month will be. I am hoping much lower b/c I am making extra efforts to use the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer between 8pm--8am. I also noticed my washer and dryer are not energy efficient.
I do a TON of laundry ALL the time so I have become more time conscious b/c LIPA told me in between is considered Peak hours which is more . So we shall see if this makes a dent?

The panels usually go on the roof so they are out of the way, and depending on the type and brand, they are flexible, so can conform to all sorts of shapes.
Here's a US Dept of Energy link with some basics: http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/water_heating/index.cfm/mytopic=13230
This site says that typically, the solar collector should be 50%-100% of the surface area of the pool.
I know quite a bit about photovoltaic solar (creating electricity), but not very much on pool heating, so I can just give you links that I know about.

My landlord called and asked that they come back to read the meter again and they found the error in the reading and adjusted the bill...

Re: LIPA Bill... KWH Used
I was 419 this month - compared to 1900 last year!!! I thought $92 was a bargain!
I wish the solar heater was an option for our pool. Our pool is nestled into the back corner of our lot.
