How would you show your DR in an open house?
We never got DR furniture and now we're putting the house on the market temporarily. Right now I have a 6ft banquet table in there and folding chairs (just to have seating if we have company over). I think, with a decent tablecloth, that it should stay. DH thinks we should clear out the whole room.
What do you think?

I would dress it up as much as possible and leave it, just to give people an idea as to the size of table that would work.
Maybe you can get cheap chair covers?

I think you should do want you mentioned. Some people can't visualize things. Even if you don't have a real set, what you have set up will help them.

totally agree, something in the room is better then nothing in the room. Some people just can't visualize the space with something already there. Table cloth and maybe chair covers if you can. Otherwise just the table cloth with maybe a centerpiece.

My sister bought a cheap set off craigslist when they were selling their house. I think for $200 she got a table 8 chairs a buffet and a hutch.

Re: How would you show your DR in an open house?
I'm house hunting now and it's always easier for me to visualize my furniture in a room if there is already furniture in it.
It's hard for me to visualize an empty room. I just don't have that ability.

What about chair covers for the folding chairs? I think they sell cheap ones that would look nicer and more finished than just folding chairs.

ITA with this. I think that staging the room would help tremendously...

i would get some slip covers for the folding chairs.....and maybe set a few place settings at the table to dress it up....think about the way tables look when you are shopping - usually they have some kind of centerpiece and settings displayed - i think that always makes tables look nicer...

Re: How would you show your DR in an open house?
I guess im the odd man out on this one, but when i was house shopping the furniture and personal "cha chi's" usually was very distracting for me (9 times out of 10 it was just gross, peed on old stuff,ha) I preferred wide open empy spaces, so my imaginatioin could go wild.
However, i agree with everyone else, there is a reason people pay $$ to have their homes staged, it is shown to help get a quicker sale. I would try craigslist for a cheapy set and maybe some pretty white chair covers. Good luck!
