Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

Several gorgeous houses (at least in the MLS pictures) are located on somewhat major roads (heavy traffic, single lane roads). So far we have automatically ruled them out as we would prefer a more residential area, but my DH wants to give some of them a-go. I just think most buyers would be hesitant to look at them and if we ever do want to move, it will make it difficult to sell (regardless if we keep it in great condition).

Thoughts?

In this market I feel like prices are down so yes they will be harder to sell bc people have more options. Resale will depend on this, if the market is up again like a cple yrs ago then it will resale easier.

Also it depnds on how busy the road is Chat Icon

Re: Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

No

- Too hard to go in and out of driveway. I have seen people trying to backout in traffing time and they just stand there in their driveway.
- Hard for resale
- Too much noise traffic
- Safety issue if you have younger children who want to play in driveway. Otherwise, no basketball, no bikes, etc...

Re: Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

Sure, if the price was right... I've seen about 4-5 houses on a main road within a 2-3 mile area sell like hotcakes... They were priced right for this market and one was a short sale

This was my reasoning for not even looking at them as well.

Re: Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

I said no.

My sis lives on a one lane busy street and its crazy! People honk at you if you try to make a left into her driveway!! I generally park on the street bc I dont want the headache of trying to back out of her driveway.

She also gets lots of garbage on her lawn too.

She has a nice backyard, so its not bad for the kids, but I would just be so afraid if one slipped through the gate!!

If there was an office and I had a business that I could run from there, then I would. Otherwise, I doubt it.

having grown up on a busy street I didn't even consider buying on one. as a kid i just didn't have the same kind of fun outdoors as friends of mine who lived on quiet blocks. silly maybe since kids don't typically hang out right in front of their house! but that was my main reason. all the other more practical reasons mentioned above crossed my mind too!

No-we passed on some houses that were perfect for us, just for the fact that they were on a main road.

i completely agree. we even ruled out houses that were just a few houses down from roads like this. if it had a double yellow, we said no. because we have a young child and plan on having more, it became a deal breaker for us.

Re: Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

No. DH and I want kids and have pets, and I don't want to worry about any of them running into a busy street. (Yes, I know I'll have to watch them regardless). The decreased privacy and traffic noiose would bother me.

The only exception to this is if I had a business out of my house and needed to be on a major road for zoning purposes.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. When I think of a main road, I think of 4 lane street, like Jeruselem Avenue. However, I live on a street that is the main access road going into my community. Are there cars? Yes, but it isn't very busy.

Our exact reasons for not considering busy roads. We did not even look at any that were on busy roads.

No, we wouldn't. With kids, it woudl be tough and I would worry about relase later.

We won't be having children and even we wouldn't buy on what we called "double yellows". The streets that are so busy that they have a double yellow line down the middle for no passing.

I live on a busy side road which cuts between 2 main roads and DH and I are concerned about our DD playing outside when she gets older. People tend to drive fast down our street and it makes us crazy. I say stay away from busy roads.

No! We looked at one house that was at the end of a block that was off of a busy single lane 'major road'. I was so worried that one of my pets would get out one day and dash into the busy road. Isn't worth the risk!

I wouldn't even look at them when we were in the process. DH was open to it but not me. DH's family lives on a single lane main road and several drunk drivers have ended up on their lawn. The last one almost crashed into the living room where my FIL was sitting.

Re: Would you consider a house on a single lane "major road"?

if your driveway backed into it - definite NO, sometimes a corner house has the driveway on the side street which i think is fine.

If it is a major highway - no

If its a main roadway going into a town, maybe but driveway must not back into the main street and it depends on the neighborhood.

My friends lived on Wellwood ave and their driveways were situated to the back of the home not leading out directly to the main road. We survived many years of playing and riding our bikes across wellwood avenue to get to the park.
