Like some PP have said, it is definitely do-able at Ikea. We just bought a whole new kitchen (cabinets, wood countertops, 2 appliances) for under $6000. We got white also...the name of the door finish is "stat". I wish I had pictures to show you, but at the moment it's all in boxes in my dining room...it is being installed starting in 2 weeks.

we got gorgeous hanseem cabinets, with a stain and a glaze from Swan Kitchen Tile and bath in westbury. They cost us 7K including tax and delivery and all the extra features. There are pics in my album. We worked with Marie.She was very neg. on pirices

thanks everyone!
i think that if we get this house we'll give painting a shot - we'd also add crown molding to the top of the cabinets and of course some really nice hardware.....if down the line the cabinets get too worn looking we figure we can always replace all of the uppers and have the bottoms re-finished to preserve the granite - that was my biggest worry - what if down the line we want new cabinetry but can't demo because of the granite - but i think the solution to that would be replacing everything but the bottom bases....
now we just have to actually get the house  with the luck we've been having that will really be a miracle

If your cabinets are solid wood, it would make much more sense to either paint them or hire someone to paint them then to go out and spend all that money on cheaper quality cabinets. If they are painted correctly they will not look crappy in a few years.

There's also another place that a few builders have used called J & K cabinets - next to Swan Kitchen Tile and Bath in Westbury - they are very affordable
