SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

When you have kids?

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I mean sure, our moms did without, and generations before them...but when I think of say being stuck with a flat tire and DS in the car or something like that happening, I wonder.

Yet the prices for phones and plans are just crazy these days. I mentioned this to someone the other day and they said but " a cell phone is a neccesity" in this day and age...and I am unsure if I agree.

What do you think?

yup ESPECIALLY when u have kids. even if you get a pre-paid with a few minutes, its worth the investment in an emergency.

Personally...I say they are a luxury...not a necessity. I think we (with the first person on that list being ME) as a society have come to depend on them a little too much and they appear to be a necessity but I can say for certain that if money got tight it would be the first thing to go for me.

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

For me, a cell phone is absolutely a necessity.

When we were younger there were payphones on every street corner. I can't remember the last time I saw a payphone.

God forbid I broke down on the parkway with Jack in the car, I would have a heart attack.

My father outlasted all of us and just got a cell phone for the first time two years ago, when I was expecting Jack and when my grandmother was dying. We needed to get in touch with him if either of those two happened while he was commuting or on the golf course.

This is sooo true. My mom's car broke down when she was in a HUGE shopping center and her cell phone was dead...There was NO payphone within 2 blocks of it. she finally asked people to borrow their phone. she had to make like 4 calls to get someone to pick her up and call a tow and it was hard to get the person to want to stand there while she got in touch with someone using his phone!

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

i personally think it is a necessity... like PP have said there used to be tons of pay phones around, now if you see them your lucky if they work.

with that said also, growing up people genuinely were nice, so if you had a flat tire they would stop and help change it, now a days if you get a flat and someone stops, you worry if they are going to try to kill you or abduct you... if they stop.

also out parents grew up with the age of CB radios, so if someone passed someone they would usually radio a PO and they would come to assist you... but since CBs are virtually non existent (except in truckers worlds) i would say cell phones are a must have.

I think it's a necessity in case of an emergency. I don't think it's a necessity to keep in touch with everyone 24 hours a day..if that makes sense.

I think so for emergency's ~ since you don't really see too many pay phones around these days.

I definitely feel at this point that cell phones are a necessity. I do think that having extra features is the luxury part. I have a very basic cell phone that I only use when I have to. I go days without using it. I only pay about $35 a month for it.

I don't think it's a necessity, more convenient to have in times of emergency.

i've always been on the fence about this one but now that we have the cell phones and there aren't any pay phones around, you have to ask yourself what if? i have gone out at night with my kids and it's a little scary if you don't have your phone with you!!! think about it hon!!

To me, nice to have but not a necessity. I barely use mine, rarely have it on me and half the time it isn't even charged. I am lucky if I use mine 2-4 times a month! But I do like to have it god forbid, i drive and get stuck somewhere or something like that.

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

I think for myself it is a necessity. Growing up, my mom was home and my dad was in his office when I was at school etc and there was only one number they needed to call to find them. I am on the road a lot for my job and if anything happened to my children, I would want to know immediately.

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

For me it is absolutely a necessity - its a security blanket for when i am out with the kids, hubby or by myself - I know that someone is just a number away in case i need to reach them in an emergency.

Also - I don't use my cell phone to chat with friends at all - i use it as an emergency (or option) in case someone needs to reach me urgently and im not at home.

ETS - in all honestly - I think i could probably do without it if i had too - just like other things - but i "me and hubby" thinks its an important neccesity to have right now. Yeah - i could probably live fine without it though.

As someone in the field 90% of my day, there is no othr way I could ever be contacted if anything were to go wrong with anyone in my family. Absolute necessity.

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

I don't have a cell phone. I haven't had one since before Robbie was born. We've made it just fine so far. *Knock Wood*

I just can't justify the expense for what is just another way for the world to find me wherever I am.

I am considering getting a phone with no plan to leave in the car or carry with me so I can call 911 in case of an emergency.. but I don't hink I will ever buy a plan.

My 8 year old wants one. He will probably get one before either me or my husband!Chat Icon

Re: SPR-Do you feel cellphones are a neccesity?

I think a landline isn't necessary.... what's the point? you have a cell!

Every time my mom walks eryk in his stroller in MIL's neighborhood in brooklyn (where all houses look the same!) I am happy that not only I have a cell, but I got mom one too.... if she ever were to forget the house #, she can call....

Also, when mom went to the Dr. and they insisted she get admitted to the hospital, she called my cell with her cell when I was at work....

When DS is crying for food during the carride home, I call DH to tell him to make a bottle and prep everything for his arrival.....

so many reasons for a cell. the only one I can think of for a landline is 'if the cells are blocked (like on 9/11)'. such a rare occassion.... just as likely the landlines would be knocked down by a tree. IMO... ditch the landline and get a family plan Chat Icon

I kinda feel like they are. I would hate to break down at night with Rylan in the car...or anytime for that matter. I can't even remember the last time I saw a working pay phone.

I totally look at it differently. Even though we each have a cell phone, I would never get rid of the landline with kids in the house. If there is ever an emergency in the house, the kids will always know where the home phone is and won't need to look for one of our cell phones. Also, sometimes my ILs or SIL watch the kids at our house and I feel more comfortable knowing that there is a phone in the house instead of relying on them to have a charged cell phone. Not to mention, I think talking on the cell phone for more than a few minutes sux.

all you would have to do to resolve any of those problems is to leave 1 cell fully charged in the same place all of the time. At our home, DH's phone is always on the dining table.... fully charged. (I actually can't stand talking on landlines anymore Chat Icon they're so HUGE. At home, I cook while talking on my bluetooth. I can run throughout my house w/ my headset on while talking... bluetooth is a brilliant invention!)

I swear landlines still exist mainly becuase of people's habits and comfort zones.

on the flipside, all of our friends and family have our cell #'s as primary contact #'s.... so whether we're at work, at home, on the road, we're always available. no leaving messages at work, at home, and finally debating whether it's 'important enough' to call the cell #.
