Brazilian Straightening - dangerous fumes?
Has anyone ever heard of this:
the chemicals are odorless but as time goes by they break down into the air and can cause illness to you or those around you

Yes, I've hear this. That's why I opted for Japanese Hair Straightening.
From what I understand from the extensive researching I've done on the subject...
Brazilian Straightening uses formaldehyde which is a carcinogen (cancer causing). Marketing would have you believe that the Keratin in the treatment is what straightens your hair, but it's actually the formaldehyde that straightens it. The fumes during application can be dangerous as well as the fact that the coating wears off your hair over time and the danger of the formaldehyde wearing off your hair in unknown.
You can google the subject and find a lot of information that will more clearly explain.

Oh man...then why would they continue to allow it to be done?

Oh man...then why would they continue to allow it to be done?
for the same reason that they still sell cigarettes.

There are Brazilian treatments - i.e., the Keratin one - that do not contain formaldehyde. You just need to be cautious about where you go and what they are using. I actually just had mine done by my BFF this past Thursday. I love it! I also did it last summer at the salon my mom works at. But I only do the Keratin one.

I recently got it done, and I was nervous about the fumes, I can honestly tell you that the straightenings I've had in the past have been much more smelly than the keratin, I didn't smell a thing actually....just an FYI
