What to do about branches that hang over our neighbor's yard?
We moved into our home 2 years ago, but we haven't had many interactions with our neighbors. They seem nice, but our only communication is usually just a wave hello if we see them outside. Today I was doing yardwork, and my neighbor asked me if DH or I mind if he trims the branches from one our bushes that hang over onto his property. I said we wouldn't mind at all, and apologized for the bush being so close to his property ( although it's not really our fault since it was there already when we moved in). But now I'm wondering, should I have offered to trim the branches for him since they are a part of a bush on our property? It would just seem a little awkward to me though since I would have to go onto their property and I don't know how much they would want to trim. DH wasn't there when this conversation happened, but he thinks I should have offered for us to trim the branches. I don't want to be considered a rude neighbor. Is it usually expected that the "owner" or a tree or bush is responsible for trimming branches that hang over onto neighboring properties?

i think you did the right thing. we trim the branches of our neighbors' trees that hang in our yard. i would never expect them to offer to do it for us. i also think it was nice of him to ask, but i don't think he has to because it's on his property.

We trim our neighbors trees on our side of the fence and never even thought to ask permission

We just did this this past week.. there were vines and branches hanging over the fence in the backyard and I couldnt stand it when I mowed.. felt like I was in the woods lol. So I went to town on them.. waited for DH and he finished the rest!
Funny though, the neighbor came over and asked me if I wanted him to cut the huge branches down that started in his yard.. I wanted to say yes but I didnt.

You did the right thing! They ARE your bushes, so you are really responsible for them. If it is more convinient in the long run for you, maybe consider removing them and planting something that is less maintenance if privacy is an issue.
