BTDT- Natural childbirth

im really thinking about going all natural when i give birth. I was wondering what others experiences were w/ this. How long were you in labor? How bad really was the pain?
Any other thoughts would be great too. Thanks

Re: BTDT- Natural childbirth

I dont know if this helps but I will share my exp.

I had an UNEXPECTED natural birth.
I had 5/6 hrs of labor.

Went to hospital at 12ish with contractions, only 2cm and was told, go home.
Came back 4hrs later, was 10cm, rushed in, 10 min and 6 pushes later.

Labor was severe starting around 2am-6ish yes that was painful towards the end.

The 10min pushing, I felt it all.

All of it I would never change. i felt great afterwards.

I think the best thing to do is to be prepared for all types of situations. If you want to go natural, great, but in the end it may not work out that way, so just prepare yourself and be open to all options.

I used to joke with people that after I got out of the shower I would take a sharpie and write "I want drugs" on my stomach just incase I went into labor and my DH wasn't there or something happened.

It hurts a lot, but I bet 99% of us would do it again.

ITA! The worst thing you can do is "set yourself up"
Go with an open mind but try your hardest to do it drug free. IMHO, the worst part is NOT knowing how much longer labor will be. The UNKNOWN is what's so darn scary. I'm a drug free birth mommy. You can FM me anytime.

Never thought I would go drug free, but it was a fantastic experience and I am 100% planning to do it again!

I was up and about less than an hour after giving birth and did not need pain killers after. I have a really low pain threshold, but it was manageable. You feel kick azz after, tooChat Icon

Labor started gradually the night before with mild cramps...

The pain was there but tolerable, more pressure and the urge to push than pain though...

It was an amazing expereince! Planning to do it again! Such a Natural High afterward Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: BTDT- Natural childbirth

I was all set to go natural and without drugs...I mentioned it to my doctor a few hundred times! But I kept an open mind and was willing to accept the epidural if need be.
Well, I didn't contract on my own, so I had to have Pitocin after my water broke, and then because the contractions were so intense and frequent (not terribly painful though), I needed to have the epidural to breathe!

My sister, on the other hand, cries when she has pins and needles in her foot (seriously, she does). But because of the way her labor progressed, there was no time for the epidural, so she gave birth naturally....and she said it wasn't all that bad...even with her incredibly low pain tolerance.

I think it's great to go into it thinking that you can go naturally, just keep in mind that it may not work...but it all winds up the same in the end!

ITA! I wanted all natural, but didnt go into labor til 41w5d... needed pitocin 41w6d b/c i wasn't progressing... I went for the epidural after the pitocin, but did have it turned off for pushing. And then needed a c-section after pushing for 4 hours . I used a midwife and we tried everything to get him out but his head was facing the wrong way and couldn't make the final turn to come out. If I could tell you anything from my experience it would be "Don't expect ANYTHING to go according to plan"

Yes totally.

This is my 4th and I still have an open mind. I still go into labor thinking I may want an epi or a c/s is still possible- you never know. You have to be mentally prepared no matter if it's you're 1st kid or your 5th. KWIM?

Biggest thing is to labor at home- can't stress that enough. While you are laboring at home try to stay as active as possible.

I had a very similar experience on Tuesday morning when I delivered my DD. I went into the hospital at midnight, was 6 cm. though. Gave birth 4.5 hours later. Like Smileyd said, towards the end it was very painful. But it was an amazing experience and I want to try and do a planned natural if we have # 3.

Re: BTDT- Natural childbirth

I had a very similar story to SmileyD... my water broke and contractions started immediately at home around 3:30am... got to the hospital at 4:30..and I was 9 and a half centemeters... I pushed for 80 mins and gave birth at 6:30. Was it painful? Hell yea! Would I do it again? Hell Yea! When it was over I was up and walking around within the hour.

Re: BTDT- Natural childbirth

DS#1 labor was 10 hours from the time I was admitted until he was in my arms. I pushed for twenty minutes.

DS#2 was 3 1/2 hours from the time I was admitted and in my arms. I pushed for fifteen minutes.

Both times I had pitocin and it hurt like h#$$. I think that made it hurt more.

The only reason that I did it is because I am afraid of the epidural (as crazy as that sounds).

I really went in open minded because you really don't know what can happen. I'll go in this time with the same frame of mind and see what happens.

Labor is not really something that you can explain (pain wise). Only you will know how much you and your body can take when it happens.

As someone else said go in open minded.
