What's your opinion in this?

Is it necessary to have your own pediatrician come see your newborn at the hospital.

the reason i ask is bc a few of the pediatricians I was looking into are not affiliated with my hospital so I didnt know what to do.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

I specifically chose my pediatrician b/c she was affiliated with my hospital, but when I gave birth, she was out b/c of an emergency and the "in hospital" pediatrician took care of my son. I remember freaking out about getting a doctor affiliated with the hospital so s/he could take care of my son when he was borhn, but now I realize that it was so unnecessary. Also, I delivered at Columbia and I spoke to them about this and they said that people deliver from areas not close to the hospital (NJ, LI, westchester) and therefore their peds can't come, so it is not a big deal.

I don't think it is a big deal. I delivered in the city and my ped was on LI.

I agree. Not a big deal. We did have ours there since he is affiliated with the hospital I delivered at but all they do is a quick once over the baby before discharging and they answer any questions you may have. We did go see our ped at his office 2 days after we got home though.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

I would just make sure the pediatrician at the hospital is covered under your insurance if your ped doesn't check DC.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

When I first found my pediatrician she was affiliated with my hospital but she was stopping hospital visits 7/31 and my ds was born on 8/4 so we used the pediatrician's in the hospital and they were great

Re: What's your opinion in this?

Not a big deal. The hospital will assign someone to your baby and then you'll take DC to your regular ped when you get home.

There isn't a single ped in my area who was affiliated with my hospital. It was fine.

I don't think it's necessary. That being said... Make sure you are comfortable with the hospital they ARE affiliated with if, heaven forbid, anything happens later on.

Very good point!

I just checked and they are with Schneiders so I am happy with that.

At the time I thought it was a big deal, but now I don't think it is such a big deal. We went to the ped's office when the baby was about a week old anyway.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

I am delivering at one hospital and my ped is affiliated with the other hospital. Honestly i would rather be delivering at th hospital where my ped is affiliated with but i had a hard time finding an ob doc that would take me being high risk and delivering there. So the resident ped doc at stony brook will be checking out my little girl and then she will see her ped once we get out.

I don't think so. I didn't have a ped chosen until the day I gave birth.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

I never do.
It doesn't work out that way. I research the peds who attend my hospital and choose. Then I switch to my ped once we leave the hospital. It's one quick phone call to the insurance company. Seems like a pain and an inconvenience but it's really not for me.
My ped is assoc with SUNY and my hospital is NSLIJ. I haven't found a ped that I like better than the one I've had for 9 years.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

when we were interviewing peds, it was important to me that our ped would be able to check out DD in the hospital. Now thinking back, it really wasn't a big deal.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

My first pediatrician was not affiliated. Another pediatrician checks out the baby and then you bring the baby to see your reg doc a few days later. NO big deal.

I switched peds and my new ped was affiliated with the hospital that I delivered at for my second child. HE couldn't come that day though so someone else checked her out anyway. Still no big deal.

Maybe for my third my ped will be at the hospital.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

Our ped was affiliated and saw DD right away. DD was born with some issues (severe jaundice, cardio issues) so I was happy to have a consistent doctor from Day 1. But it wouldn't have been the end of the world if he wasn't affiliated.

Re: What's your opinion in this?

No. Our pediatrician is on LI near our home, and my hosptial was in NYC. I asked my OB-GYN about this and she recommended a pediatric group for the hosptial. When we got home, we saw his pediatrician.
