Speech problems/pre-school
ds is almost 2 and getting me worried, he doesnt respond to his name and is not really speaking very well he really only can say like 4 words. I was wondering if anyone knows if Just Kids in Middle Island is a good school? I know they have speech therapy there as well. I am looking to send Ds there to see about socialization and to hopefully develop his speech,

Re: Speech problems/pre-school
Do you know you can call Early Intervention for a free evaluation and if he qualifies, he will get free speech therapy?

Re: Speech problems/pre-school
You can call this number
Suffolk County Health Services 50 Laser Court Hauppauge, New York 11788 Main: 631-853-3100 Fax: 631-853-2300
Just tell them you would like an evaluation. I wouldn't wait until he is two, especially since he doesn't respond to his name.
Just Kids is a preschool that a lot of children that receive services through EI and CPSE attend. Contact EI first before contacting the pre-school.

Well, it's a whole procedure, and it's been a while since I"ve done it (my son is now 10). But, they will send someone out to get some basic info from you and determine what type of evaluations your child needs (speech, psych., PT, OT, etc.). Then they schedule the evaluations where someone will come to your home to evaluate your child. It may be more than one person, and it may be more than one day depending on what evaluations they are doing. Then reports are written up, and you have a meeting to discuss the findings and implement a plan. So it takes some time.
If your child doesn't have severe delays, you would probably only be approved for home therapy, rather than center based therapy. But def. ask about it at the meeting.

Alternatives for Children is the exact name (just in case she wants to look it up).

Everything EmmaNick said is right.
My son has a speech delay and started having in home speech first. He only qualified the preschool once we found that the at home was not working for him. So after 6 months of speech, he then went to an EI class at a preschool like Just Kids. So you may have to try the at home first, but you never know!
Also, I have heard wonderful things about Just Kids. I wanted to use them, but they were full and I couldn't get DS in (I tried to enroll him a week before classes were starting in the fall). DS goes somewhere else and I love them.

Re: Speech problems/pre-school
I would call and get an EI evaluation, it cannot hurt and if he gets approved, he will get free Speech services as well as pre pre school at a speech based school. Good luck
