Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
The issue is NOT teachers alone..the issue is poorly managed funds and over zealous bureaucracy across the board. If stubborn LIer's would consolidate some of the repetitive services within their county, taxes would be lowered. Simple as that. On another level, if they are willing to lower their standard of service, their taxes would be lowered. If there were simply more taxpayers on LI (NYC has volume on their side when it comes to their lower taxes..along with a host of other issues), taxes would be lowered.
To sit around and accept it is difficult, but to make uninformed and angered statements is not doing anything, either. The OP was stating her OPINION and how she deals with what she feels is an eventuality (over time, EVERYTHING gets more expensive).
Meanwhile, taxes will be lower since everyone's home values have plummeted anyway...

This is yet to be seen in Nassau. It is very possible taxes won't decrease b/c they can raise the rate. So althought Nassau re-assessed everyone's homes (at approx. 17% less) you might be paying the same taxes. We'll see when we get our tax bills for 2010.

your post seems very judgemental. Many people would say, your DH is working 3 jobs, what kind of quality of life does he have? he doesn't even have time to enjoy his home that he pays high taxes for Do you even see him?!
Yes, I do. We have a great life. We are sacrificing because we do not have children yet and are saving as much money as we can. We have been on several great vacations recently - Australia, Mexico, and St. Lucia. We prioritize our time together but in order to own a home at 25, we both have to work really hard. We have every weekend together and breaks. And he works 3 jobs because ... are you ready? This is where the pity party starts! We are teachers! lol We need the extra income. We have been dating since we were 16 and have literally been saving since then! Its hard to make ends meet here, maybe one day we wont, but my point is, Im NOT going to sit here and complain about the high taxes. It is what it is.
ok, we'll see what happens in 3-4 years from now when your taxes keep skyrocketing, then you will complain that the taxes are high and your salary is not keeping up with the increases
Yes, then I will move. My salary goes up 500 a year. I work in NYC. You think my post is judgemental. Yours seems mean spirited - I guess financial hardship is funny to you
You are very lucky to get a $500/yr. raise. Not everyone gets that!

ITA. I had no increase. I actually had to lower my prices to stay competitive and DH's income was even lower this year. So I guess $500 is not hardship afterall. I guess it depends who you talk to. It may seem very little increase but a lot of people in the private sector are not even getting that. Some companies are even decreasing benefits or asking for furlough (sp?).

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
I happen to think that Nassau County is one of the most corrupt counties from their parking and traffic violations court to the school system. Taxes will not go down even if your home values go down. The tax revenue is still needed to support the corruptness.
DH and I are discussing moving but let me tell you, it will have to include my disabled brother and my elderly parents who are taking care of my brother.
Not easy at all. We are their support system right now. Can't leave without them. I can't afford to support them financially so there's going to have to be some magic trick or lottery winning in my future.
I would like to leave right now but we have excellent jobs that pay well even though we haven't gotten raises and won't for the forseeable future.
Our quality of life is not the best, but LI and NYC have a lot to offer. We do have some of the best schools, geographic desirability and culture. If we want to stay here we pay.
We as taxpayers should unite and try to get heard. I'm on it and I am writing letters and calling my representatives.
It's ok to whine about stuff, just use that energy to try and fix it.

I get what you are saying. Taxes are high, they aren't going to get lower, so stop complaining. Same old gripes, over and over. I think you agree with the vents about how the taxes are distributed are crazy though and don't mind those vents. I hear ya.

I think this is the best point made in this whole thread. People love to complain- I am one of them- but if people organize and get heard, especially if elected officials start losing their jobs, maybe there will be change.

Oh my goodness, I feel so lucky about my entire life! My job, my home, my husband, etc. I only broght up the $500 because of the previous post. Also, that being said, I may not even have a job next year because my schools budget has been cut over 1 million dollars. Teachers are getting excessed in every department and class sizes are said to go up to MAYBE 40 or more students. Our already limited supply room has been cut down even more. What saddens me the most (and I mean this from the bottom of my heart) is the negative effect this has on my children (especially being a special ed. teacher). I hope I have a job next year because I genuinely love what I do and would honestly take a pay cut to save jobs and keep class sizes down!!
I dont know why this thread became about teachers ... that was not my intention at all!
Anyway, EVERYONE is taking a major hit here ...

That would be our company: 401K match (which was laughably low so it will hardly be missed) has been cut All holidays are no longer paid - 9 unpaid days off this year We now have to take one additional unpaid day per month off - another 12 unpaid day off Our 5 allowable sick days are no longer paid if we need to take one (and with more and more people coming in when they should be home, that's more likely) No merit raises through the end of the calendar year. Everything reassessed in December to determine if it continues into 2010. It equates to losing 3-4 weeks pay this year. I know I'm not the only one facing cuts like this. I have a friend that said his company is going to a 4-day work week. You do what you can to control expenses then get nailed by increasing tax bills, utilities like LIPA saying that they need to raise rates because LI residents have done such a good job of reducing power usage the company isn't bringing in enough revenue so they want to charge us more for using less... I don't agree that it can't be changed but it's a long and hard effort and can be an ugly and devisive process - I went through some of it when I lived in MA and it's not easy.

And on the topic of doing somthing about it, have you seen any of the coverage on the growning number of Tea Party revolts (inspired by the first tea party in Boston). Fox News gives it a fair amount of coverage. I'm not sure if it's even been mentioned on the broadcast stations. Tax payers across the nation are becoming more vocal in letting their dissatisfaction be heard. There is a movement afoot for a nationwide Tea Party on April 15th.

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
Edited out most of my response because it would fall on deaf ears.
If you are that frustrated by your tax increase, as I am, get out there and speak up at your board meetings. Tell them less administrators (one administrator is the salary of 2 1/2 teachers in my district) more fiscally sound spending and then start calling your elected officials and tell them no more unfunded mandates!! Tell them you can't take the taxes anymore. Put the blame where it is start with Washington and work your way down!!!
If you all contacted your elected officials and tell them no more raises for them, no more bailout of companies like AIG and stop sending so much money overseas and start helping the people here that need it I bet you change can happen. Whining about it here does nothing. Stand up and speak out. If every person on here contacted their elected officials believe me change can happen. (this is coming from someone who took on the federal government with another mommy and one other person and won!)

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
I can't stand when people say just leave. Why should I leave my family is here, and we have commitments here. I don't think it is too much to ask that are tax money is used appropriately and not misused, and if there is a way to give us a break then they should. If they keep driving the middle class out who is going to pay the taxes? The rich will stay beacuse they can afford it and the "undocumented" workers get to stay becasue they don't pay taxes.
You seem to be at a great point in life. New house career the start of your life. We were all there. just wait until the burdens of life get you. Kids, cars and car repairs, house and house repair. Along with rising oils and gas prices, new tax on LIPA and property taxes going up. enjoy now!

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
I'll try to keep this short but I'd like to give a first hand example of why we need to bust all of the big unions in this country & start over. At my office we had a problem with a guy that lived in an apartment nearby walking his big dog on our property & letting it take huge dumps & leaving them there. Our patients stepped in them, we stepped in them. My boss confronted them guy with dog, he told my boss to eff off & the next day there was a load of dog crap on the top of our cement steps going into the building. Obviously the guy was messing with us. A very high ranking LOCAL politician happens to be a patient and one of my bosses mentioned to him we were having a problem with this guy & his dog. Here's the good part- two days later FOUR town trucks & NINE men worked for 4.5 HOURS on my boss' PRIVATE property clearing trees, picking up dog $hit & putting "curb your dog" signs as a "favor" to my boss. Since then they guy with the dog was evicted from his apartment, an inspector threatened to write the landlord up for violations unless he evicted him and EVERYDAY since this has happened a municipality public safety officer sits in her car in our parking lot watching our building several hours a day. This is A GROSS misuse of tax dollars & power & this $hit happens ALL THE TIME. This is why our taxes keep going up & the townships are broke. The system is broken, these people are too powerful & need to be removed.
I'm sorry, I will never except that bull$hit-"its LI the taxes are higher because its better here, if you don't like it-move" That is assinine...if some people want to get screwed in the azz by these local governments & school districts, thats fine. Speak for yourself, I for one will be participating in the tea party on wednesday & I've already expressed my dissatification to local & state politicians.
And just remember everyone that is in favor of "big government" A government that is big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you have!!!!

You really don't know why?? It may not have been your intention (I *think* you intention was to chastise people on this board for venting, which they are entitled to do), but I'm sorry, it is just naive to think that a topic about LI taxes would occur without bringing up school taxes, school budgets and administrator/teacher benefits and salaries, both while they are employed and are retired.
I don't believe it's as easy as saying "you don't like it, move." I'm someone who moved away. I probably won't ever be able to come back b/c of how expensive it is. That's life, and I'm dealing with it, and watching my retired parents trying to deal with it and keep their home.
But the bottom line is that for any of the situation to improve, the public needs to speak up.
Show up at a school board meeting. Show up at a Town board meeting.
Or a real revolutionary idea-- Run for the School Board yourselves. Take a look at the people running for the school boards in your districts. Who are they? What do they do for a living? Are they from all walks of life and does that represent you? Or are they from a particular background that is going to only perpetuate the situation?
Just b/c they say they want to keep costs down, doesn't mean they will do it.

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
How could I ever say it's better here when I've never lived anywhere else. People live perfectly happy and fulfilling lives throughout the country. With taxes being what they are here it does make it difficult to want to stay here. With the proposed increased modest neighborhoods will be paying close to what I pay in rent and that's just for taxes. My parents can no longer afford to retire on Long Island and are planning to move down south. I too want to stay close to them. To stay close to family, many young educated professional may leave too.

Well, there are a zillion other factors that go into why our taxes are high, not just teachers/admins etc.
And my intention was not to chastise anyone! I am simply stating my opinion like everyone else. I just love how teachers/schools are the scapegoats when it comes to high taxes. Our schools are the main reason why people are willing to pay half a million dollars for a 3 bedroom ranch!! So, they must be doing something right!
*And just so its noted again, I do NOT teach on L.I.*

Re: ** My opinion, Taxes on Long Island will only get higher!
When school taxes are 63% of an almost $10,000 tax bill you have to wonder if you're really getting fair value for that annual expenditure, and that's not to say teachers don't deserve a good salary for what they do.
It just seems that the cost of the school system in this part of the country is out of line with other areas. As someone else mentioned, there are other areas of the country with excellent schools that don't have the high taxes we have.
ETA - the school system had ZERO to do with why we moved here - it had to do with family, employment, and DH's love of the area since he grew up here, but we will not be staying once we retire. We have no desire to pay what will amount to probaby $20,000 or more in property taxes annually on retirement income. Jobs keep us here for now, but we're watching for the balance to tip, and when it becomes more cost-effective for us to get out of here, we'll do so.

ITA with this!!! Everyone thinks LI schools are the best and if you move to NC or another state your child won't be as "smart" or as educated. I think that is bull!!! Maybe the teachers dont get paid as much or their curriculum is different but last time I checked ivy league schools were filled with kids from out of state as well as kids from LI. Kids that graduate from schools in other states have just as much a chance to get into college as LI students.

They are scapegoats because that is where all the $ is going. Teacher salaries are 75% of the budget.
Personally though - I'll pay for the duplicated services. I want local control of school districts.

i can't understand why people don't REVOLT against LIPA (National Grid). look at all your bills... do you realize that you pay more than your electric bill in surcharges and delivery fees?
Paying school tax and other taxes... you will always have them... lets go after the corporations that are constantly screw1ng us and raising our rates, and using "surcharges" to hide under.
Oh, how i wish i were goldenrod!!

Good points about Lipa and other states schools.
Are our schools really the best anymore? It bugs me that they don't focus on spelling anymore becasue they want the kids to feel free to write. And i just heard last week on the news that one district lied about their drop out rate and graduation rate.
Lipa just added another tax.
Oh and lets not forget that no matter what we do to our houses taxes go up! Why because I put up a fence or build a patio are they entitled to more tax money??

And just remember everyone that is in favor of "big government" A government that is big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take away everything you have!!!!
absolutley agree...
The corruption and waste is horrible.. The schools have become pigs.. My gf sends her son to Lynbrook schools and was given a list of what to buy by the teacher.. *** does she have to buy her son 30 $3.00 pencils and toliet paper and papertowels? When she told me this I was flawed.....
There is such missmanagement with $$$$. Half the jobs people are grandfathered in.. The perks with medical insurance is absurd.. I grew up in a incorporated village and the guys who worked at the village also had private businesses and they woud use the materials from the inc village to use on their private construction jobs. The red tape is horrible. People dont say anything cause they will blacklist you and once big govt steps in they will dismantle everything so what is the lesser evill..
Its a pig mentality...
