Spinoff to highlights for all the brunette's out there- UPDATE - I Chose caramel, added PIC

I have dark brown wavy hair. I want to highlight it next month but I don't know if I should do blond or like a deep red?

Curious for what the majority has

this is my hair now. (don't mind the construction going on in my kitchen in the back)

I have dark brown hair also. I had blonde highlights for a while...now there more of a blonde/light brown highlight. I did red before, however I didn't like it that much..the color fades way too quickly.

I haven't highlighted my hair in over 8 years...but when I did I always loved and got the most compliments when I did red or eggplant highlights.

I did light brown/golden blonde once - but maintence on it was $$ and it just didn't look too natural...jmho

I would do a light brown - about 2-3 shades lighter than what your hair is now.

I agree. We have the same color and curl and I would do this if I felt like dealing with the upkeep.

Let us know what you decide!

I have about the same color complexion and very black hair. Few years ago I had dark red/burgundy/brownish highlights, I don't exactly remember the color name or number. It looked great and I got so many compliments all the time. That was the first and only time I had any kind of color in my hair though. I just can't deal with it unless I go grayChat Icon

I just found a pic online , my hair was eaxctly the same color

I have dark brown hair as well and I've been doing blond highlights for a while now. The only problem is it's soo much $$ and it seems like it's getting worse. My hair is so dark and grows so fast that I've been having to go back every month to get it highlighted.
The cost adds up very quickly. I've done red in the past but for me I think red looks better in the colder months. I've only gotten red highlights in the fall/winter.
If you do decide to go blond be ready to spend a lot of cash keeping up with it.

I would go with the red highlights in the fall/winter. For your hair, I would do with a dark blonde, maybe like a caramel or light brown. I would def not go too light.

Carmel sounds delish! I'd stay away from redish tones especially now that it's spring

red or brown.. I think blonde would look way too fakey.

Re: Spinoff to highlights for all the brunette's out there

I think that caramel would be the best bet. I have almost black hair too (when it's not dyed) and my stylist said that blonde would be too fake looking and I couldn't agree more. I HATE the way blond looks with black (sorry ladies, my honest opinion). Ask for a shade a few shades lighter than your natural hair and you can progressively add more highlights, which will give you an overall lighter look. One day you will be lighter and then can make your highlites lighter if you'd like.
