I have to say reading this thread has made me feel better. Because even though I didn't feel the cost was worth the benefit, I was feeling very guilty for not doing it.
We haven't decided yet, but I have to agree with this. Everywhere I turned I kept reading everything saying how you HAVE to do it, and it was making me feel awful for being undecided. Its nice to know that there are people on both sides of the fence on this issue.

My gut feeling is that I will be passing on banking the cord blood.
The expense seems extreme.
I hate to say it, but I almost feel like it's a scam. They are praying on all us nervous first time mothers and convincing us to cough up $2k.
I am NOT banking my DD #2 cord blood but I dont think its a scam....JMO

We didnt' do it with DS 1 and won't this time around either...
I think that while its not a scam, it it being completely overhyped..when I did my original research I concluded it wasn't worth the huge investment now.
I feel that a meeting about it will prob make it out to be something you NEED to do for your child..just be cautious, I am sure they want everyone to walk away having signed up for it!!

Same here. My Ob even said that it's likely more of a worthwhile investment to take that money & sink it into a college fund.
My OB said the same thing -
My cousin is also an OBGYN w/ 2 kids and she hasn't done it either -

I was feeling really guilty about not doing it. I have been getting so mych mail on how you have to so it to save your child's life. So I spoke to the doc and he himself had mixed feelings.

I am not pregnant but hope to be in the near future. I have heard about this and know that it's is expensive. Without causing too much trouble I have to ask...With all the medical research going on in the world couldn't we find that it's more helpful down the line then it is now? Like i said I don't know much about it yet, but what if there is a medical break through, and the choices we make now affect how we can help later?

I don't think we will be doing it. It is just so expensive & honestly we don't have the funds for it at the present time
same here....
also, there is not much proof that it works anyway....the chances are that it would actually work for whatever your child might get---god forbid, are actually quite slim.
i would like to look into donating it thoguh and see how that works.

I am donating it to Cyrobanks intl.. They give you a serial # and if your blood was never used and you need it.. They let you use it.. Its free

Nope, not gonna do it. I did a lot of research on it - it's helpfulness is REALLY limited, by what kind of illnesses it can treat, and for how long. The chances are just so miniscule that it would serve any real purpose that it didn't outweight the extreme cost.
Same here. For us it had nothing to do with cost. I did the research and felt that it wasnt a worthwhile expense for us.
I might have thought differently if I had some diseases in my family that the cord blood is proven to help.

same here. Also - if your Dr. waits a little bit before cutting the cord then your newborn will get all their own cord blood which is shown to be beneficial as well.

DH and I were debating this as well, I have heard that it is about $3000 and then either monthly or yearly fee...it is alot of $ and we can't even afford to do monthly payment plan. I think we will just donate it to the bank, b/c supposidly it is very rare that another person outside the child's family would be a match and use it...

I don't think we are as well. I agree with pp's that the cost will outweigh the benefits. We also don't know where medicine and technology will take us in the next few years. I was on the fence about this as well, but the cost is just too great for us.

ITA! I spoke with my OB again this time and he said he didn't recommend it - we do not have any of the conditions in our family that make you more high risk. Also there is some question my OB said that many insurance co won't cover procedures using the cord blood b.c they are considered experimental - and it could run 500K and up.

We didn't for DS or DD and I don't feel guilty at all. We did our own research and spoke to our Ped and OB and we decided against it.

After speaking to my OB, we decided not to. My OB explained banking cord blood is similar to playing a game of golf, then getting insurance that covers you if you get hit by lightning at the 17th hole. Very slim chances of it helping. So we decided not to.
